The sea cliff above north Del Mar Dog Beach shows every sign of instability, including fresh piles of slide debris lined up along its base.
Another sign of instability for the less observant.
The small cave to the right was probably excavated in part by hydraulic or pneumatic overpressures generated when large high-tide waves bash the cliff face directly. One of several ways the cliffs here are undermined by the sea.
Guess the sandstone face looked pretty solid to her. She walked her dog back and forth right next to it for a good 10 minutes.
Of course, lots of people never look up. Maybe she didn't see all the telltale signs that the much softer upper part of the cliff face is actively crumbling.
To be fair, she didn't have the benefit of a fresh pile of slide debris right in front of her.
But her boyfriend did. Note the loosened material still waiting to fall above his head.
The slide risk isn't just theoretical. In 2018 or so, a slide buried and killed a family of 8 while they picnicked at the foot of a sea cliff a few miles north of here, totally without warning. Well, except for the nearby "stay back" signs like the one above.

There is that whole undermined sidewalk above his head! So, Darwin with his wide vaulting prefrontal dome & domer can present the ultimate award at any moment. Someone doing this also does similar things regularly, things like crossing the street while looking at a phone and using a hairdryer in the bathtub.

I was with my bike advocate, architect, friend Pete after handing out five-hundred postcards about the Holiday Lighted Bike ride at Santa's arrival by tugboat, when a mom came by with four kids, one a little baby on a sack at her chest. Seven years ago a young smart clean cut man came into the sporting goods store where I worked then. He wanted a bike for a girl he just met as a gift so they could ride togher. He had a budget and I showed him one that would fit. Then he brought in the lovely girl. She loved it and he gave it to her on the spot. She loved it. That is now the mom of four! Because of the surprise gift bike and the fun it made she married him and had his kids. Values are what we invest in. He took a risk and put a down payment on being active with her. What a pay-off! He was not seeking dark bars or hookups. He wanted to actively engage in the sun, with someone lovely.

She is at least on her feet, and has a chance to get away from a slide. He, on the other hand, is sitting way up on a loose mound of sand, with loose sand right over his head, and would have little chance of getting away from a slide. He looks deeply engrossed in whatever is on his electronic device.
What's the deal with the Dog Beach? Is it a minefield or do you have to pick up after your dog? Are dogs allowed on town beaches year round, off-season only, or only at the Dog Beach?
Around here dogs are allowed from Labor Day until May 15th only, unless you're one of those entitled dog owners that insist that rules don't apply to them.

By default, dogs aren't allowed on San Diego County beaches at any time. But there are legal exceptions.
Ditto for our 3 official off-leash dog beaches. Del Mar allows off-leash, all hours, from after Labor Day to June 15, then on-leash only the rest of the year. Similar rules at the Ocean Beach and Fiesta Island dog beaches.
These 3 are our only legal off-leash options. At La Jolla Shores, on-leash only year round, but only before 9 am and after 4 pm. At Cardiff, on-leash all year, all hours.
Yeah, we have a lot of those folks, too. But it's a $400 fine, and the lifeguards don't give out a lot of warnings.
Surprisingly, no mine fields. People around here cherish beach access for their dogs and are amazingly good about picking up after them, as required by law. You don't always catch them pooping off-leash, but odds are, someone else will pick up the occasional stealth pile.
