Is it possible for a mere mortal to program a Bosch motor?

A mere mortal can do it, but Bosch won't let you. Its not a question of difficulty. Its a question of Bosch considering the information proprietary and giving you no say in the matter.

If it really bothers you that much, could you simply remove the light and wiring and put on an external light instead? Just thinking out-loud. I'm not sure if that would even work or save any battery power though. I know the Bosch motors are very proprietary and Bosch makes lots of different types such as automotive ones. I think it would be hard to do it yourself, but I have seen posts on here where people have gotten the dealer to change that for them. I think the dealers have a diagnostic tool they can use to change some of those values - one of which is the light always on. That might be your best bet, but many dealers wouldn't do that unless you knew them - I'm just guessing.

Bosch Performance Line Speed 4.0 on a Gazelle Ultimate t10+

The light is programmed to come on and stay on! I want to be able to turn it on and off.
Sadly, it’s not something you or I can do.
I also wanted the option to turn my lights on/off because of battery use, the headlight gets quite hot, and I mostly ride on paved trails during the daylight. My Trek network has been more than happy to update/change options and not one of them has charged me.

Talked to the shop today. He said they plug it in, go to the bosch dealer website and they can pick from several startup settings.
He says he will do it tomorrow.

I mentioned worse case I would wire in a switch. He said, "Oh no, don't do that! You will void the warranty!" Glad he mentioned that, I didn't think of that!

Yes, I was going to mention that!

Programming a Bosch ebike requires a special "dongle" that attaches the bike to a computer with the Bosch software installed. It gives a trained technician access to settings, history and diagnostic information. This equipment is not made available to the public for good reasons of safety, reliability and obviously warranty integrity. The paranoid and conspiracy theorists among us would have us believe this is a plot to retain business and financial control but it really is about safety, remaining in compliance with laws and regulations (the best way to avoid being hauled into court by overzealous regulators) and assuring reliable, repairable performance for customers.

It takes a tech less than 10 minutes to hook up a Bosch bike to the system and toggle the setting that enables the light switch on a Bosch ebike display unit. I have had this done to several Bosch powered bike and never been charged for it.
