I need more Advise, Please......

Holy Moly Andy, I mean Shaun, I Dearly Appreciate all the Advise, Tips, Articles, and Pictures.
You are One Brave Fellow, my wife, our Pup and I, slept in a tent in Yellowstone, and a dang Bear circled our
tent for about 5 minutes (seemed like an hour) one night, growling and snarling (I promise it wasn't me
expelling gas), and our Pup, a Chocolate Lab, who is normally pretty brave, was as skeered as we were.
Of course, being Texans I had a .12 Ga. semi-auto Security shotgun and my wife had both of our .40 cal pistols
ready to 'go to war', but it never entered our tent.
This was Extremely lucky for the next campers, as that would have been one Smelly sumbitch place to 'pitch a
tent' had it come in...... When we got home, the first thing we did was buy a 'hard-side' trailer and have since
advanced to a used (of course) Class A motorhome.
Those dang bears I just know, are Meaner than I am, so I want something solid in between me and them from
now on.
My wife will turn 54 in 2 weeks, (she keeps me Young) and I'll carry our Ride1Up's on the Top Hitch of 0ur Tiffin,
and our Kia Soul 'Tow Car' will be hitched below the bike rack, and it will hold the Pup Carts. I Hope!
We are Not 'Long Riders', but I just imagine we will go to State and National Parks and possibly ride out on the
roads to go to near lakes for her to fish in. She is a Fishing Demon...... We used to go to Jumbo Campgrounds in
Grand Mesa Nat.Forest in Colorado (Most Beautiful place I believe I've ever seen) almost every year and she would
fill our freezer up with filleted Rainbow Trout that we could eat on for month, but Colorado has shown it's dislike
for Texans, so we'll go elsewhere to spend our money, rather than bust good knuckles on 'em.
Yes, I know what you mean about this dang 'Gook Virus' (I tend to tell it like it is), but please let me know when you
are getting to Texas and we'll try to meet you, or you are certainly welcome to spend a few nights at our little ranch
in our CampHouse. Have a Great weekend, and Thanks again for all the 'Goodies' to look over.

You are an inspiration my new friend. I now not only hope to make it to 80 but hope to be still riding my ebikes and might even have a 50-something lady by my side.

Riding ebikes last year started with me tipping in at 315lbs (6ft tall) from 20 years of desk jockey work and a doctor telling me I should consider diabetic meds and I might not see 50 if I didn't do something about my lifestyle.

The love of riding ebikes has grown into a love of upgrading/maintaining them. Instead of having a garage (or yard, lol) full of cars and trying to be a self-taught mechanic, I have a basement full of bikes that motivate me to get out riding every chance possible, year round even in the cold and snow we have up here outside our Igloos.

My best friend got into the R.V. life a few years ago and he's the inspiration for me to at least start with a tent setup I can carry by car or my plan, trailer on an ebike. He's been across Canada and back and the stories he has shared inspire me to get out and do more as well - no surprise you have yourself a Class A now and do the same in style my friend.

Thank you for the reminder about camping safety, especially in a tent. My plans are mostly just to use the tent setup at campgrounds 100-200 miles from my place, let me go for a long ride out on the ebike, camp out for 2 nights, recharge my legs and my bike batteries while enjoying the outdoors for a day and then ride home.

Next year once I have the above routine under my belt I will look into multi-day trips going from camp site to camp site - but always planning ahead to locations with hydro, lots of sites in use within the campground and closer to urban areas - to help reduce the chance of anything looking to make me into a meal.

I appreciate the invite! Let's see how the next 12 months treat all of us...praying next summer will be our chance to make up for the time and travel lost this year...what a year eh?

I want to be in the comfort of our Tiffin motor home, or at Least one of our Kia Tellurides, and
Not on a bike. Now, if I had one of these when I was in my 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, or even 70's.......
These will be just for 'putting around' and taking the Pups for spins, but I know we will ride them
a Lot more and a Lot further than we did our 'Townies'.
I almost feel bad about wasting all of y'alls time helping me, but I Durn Sure Appreciate it.

Silly me - I took a moment to refresh my memory of the Ride1Up 700 - they come with swept back bars, correct?

The grips I suggested would still be a possible upgrade of the stock grips. The Jones Bar again would be a further back sweep than the stock bar and an upgrade for you to consider.

The insulated bottles will work well with the bottle mount and the 11" height I mentioned will be appreciated when reaching down between your legs to get a hold of it (behave! lol) and with a couple extra bottles in the bag like I do will work well for you.

CdnShaun, I am Amazed at your thoughts, design and fabrication on your bikes and trailers, and you Dedication to Biking, but even more impressed by your taking biking to a new level by working on them, taking trips on bikes and losing much needed weight doing so.

I have Got to get one of those Mirrors like you have on your bike. I don't like those little bitty things I have seen (they are kinda like suck'n a titty through a night gown) you just don't get the 'full effect' from those little things, if you ask me. Another 2" of my handlebars taken.......

But first, stop being so damn hard on yourself...you're freaking 80 years old and still waking up above the daisies - you should be proud!

When I blend in about longer rides to my suggestions - remember, I started just 1 year ago happy with going 17kms (about 10 miles where you're from) on my earliest rides...perspective was I would get up to 25? 30? Kms per ride and be good...now I do 100km/60 mile rides like I'm going to the grocery store....didn't see that coming a year ago...

...once you go electric and have the bikes fully 'fitted' and tricked out to yourself and the wifey (you are putting in all the right planning and research effort before even getting the bikes, that's awesome) you just might surprise yourself, and the little misses - on how far you will want to ride.

Before you know it your next search on here is about how to best carry extra batteries with you - and yes, this community is awesome, there's a few great threads on that right now.

To share, I started out with one battery on my first ebike and loved it - still do to this day...now I pack 5 batteries on my bike and go ride all day long.


But yes, I did pause for a moment when you posted here and realized - you have to get your 80 year old butt built up to ride longer and longer - good luck with that! Not a cushy Harley seat for sure - My guess is your true limitation on how far you ride will be your backside telling you 'it's time to turn back' - that's ok too friend, even at 80 you can firm that butt up to ride longer and longer. You will see.

Looking forward to you reporting in that you have your bikes and starting the test rides and upgrades - and never ever feel any guilt coming here with questions - the answers will come, saving you time and headaches - all we ever ask is eventually if you snap some great photos from your rides to share them with us to see.

But seriously, I was planning on possibly carrying one extra battery in case we got too far away from our RV, and didn't want to peddle all the way back, towing our pups, which I just imagine would be a bit of a 'drag'. My wife Heidi would be towing our 'little dog' Leakey our cross-breed Mutt we found on the side of the road, between Camp Wood and Leakey, Texas (hence the name) who only weighs 54 lbs. but I'd be towing 'Toots', our 84 lb Chocolate Lab, so she'd get Much better 'mileage' than I would........
Bikes are not like canoes and Kayaks where I ALWAYS went UP-Stream first, so coming back would be easier, when you're tired......
But, I've been on the 'web' quite a bit today (in between making and putting out more mouse and rat 'poison stations' to keep some of the Chewing rascals 'at bay') to try to find parks where it's legal to ride our e-bikes........ I am just not comfortable enough to get out on the roads, especially pulling trailers with 'Our Babies' in them.
Hopefully I can find some parks that has 'e-Bike Trails' in them that aren't for the 'Off Road Racing bikes'.
And yes, I've already been thinking about wider seats, also. In fact, I bought some for our 'Townies' that we never used, so I might look through my barn for them..........Oh Boy, Fun, Fun.
I lied and told my Doctor I was git'n too weak to walk very far, so he gave me a 'Handicapped Placard' so that may help me ride my e-bike in places where my wife possibly couldn't, I don't know........ I'm certainly not proud of it, but I'm taking it with me anyway.
I found and bought us a couple of mirrors that mount on the handlebars to see if the A-holes coming up behind me is going to Miss or Hit me. I would MUCH rather ride our bikes, especially when towing the Pups, way the heck away from cars.
It seems that there are too many inconsiderate a-holes in cars on the roads these days that don't respect anyone on a motorcycle, much less someone on a bike, anymore.
I haven't told our Pups yet, but I'm thinking they won't get to go with us as much as they re thinking they will...... and that will certainly bother the adjoining campers, I'm afraid.
I've attached a picture of Leakey (please don't tell her, but I truly believe that Leakey's Mom was a Slut, as Heidi had her DNA checked and she is mixture of 5 or 6 dogs) and Toots, who just got through checking out a Tee-Pee a RV Park we were at, somewhere in Wyoming, a few years ago.
I'd kinda like to find and talk to some e-bikers in Texas and hear where they go riding at, or where they suggest some 'first timers' to go for their 'initial ride' at. It may be better to find a large Private RV Park where we can cruse the roads there, I dunno..............

I will also keep replying to this thread right now as you have great questions, great stories to share and gives me a chance to share thoughts/insights with all the readers.

Your pups are adorable. My dad had a chocolate lab for years and I remember how deceiving his size to weight was. I can't wait to hear how you make out with 80 year old legs and an ebike motor towing 110lbs of trailer and pup - you're an inspiration to folks half your age.

Where to ride...up here in Ontario-Land what I have found is there is some great pathways (asphalt and pavement) along scenic areas - meant for multi purpose use - walkers, strollers, acoustic bikes and (thankfully allowed) ebikes. Hopefully you find some of the same in your area and the areas you travel to.

One thing to look for as I'm sure it's happen everywhere on our continent is decommissioned railway tracks. Up here in Ontario we call them 'Rail Trails'. Their conditions do vary, what I have found thus far is they typically are well maintained, packed earth/dirt, mostly flat (they were used by trains for decades so they choose to go around hills versus over them) and often connect between points of interest.

Do some searching for 'Rail Trails' and the like in your area and areas you visit. If your bikes and trailers can handle packed dirt versus pavement/asphalt/concrete only you will gain a lot of options to ride on.

One tip, and this is important:

Scout ahead. Have the little lady stay with the pups and go solo out on paths ahead of group riding with everyone in the family, or send the wife to do the same while you stay with the pups keeping them from barking up the neighbors nerves - if at all possible.

Around home or an area you are visiting for an extended period will allow you to find all the connecting routes that work well for you. Sticking to this rule recently saved my butt - I went on some packed dirt roads near my place, using my fat tire bike to be 'safe' and sure enough - came over the top of a 14% grade hill that was washed out, badly. The fat tires handled it well thankfully and I could only imagine if I had been exploring with my road-worthy bike loaded down with batteries.

Same thought goes to you going on a route with 110lbs hooked up behind you and the smooth road under you gives way to something much less desirable. Being solo (you or the wifey) lets you find these issues ahead of time while the other stays with the happy pups.

Don't be ashamed of the Handicap Placard! They issue that to you only because people would get offended if they also had 'Older than dirt and deserves the VIP treatment' placards for gents like you. Often the handicap spot up near the entrance of the door into a destination is empty so for sure use it to park your bikes while you or the wife run inside for supplies or food or whatever.

Consider it a badge of honour of making it to 80 and still rocking out like you do.

Last thought - riding out from your place hopefully you have enough pavement/asphalt to get to multiple routes to enjoy. I realize you very much look forward to the open road again and envious of you having such a sweet setup with the Class A and all the goodies, but reality is this year (2020 - what the f*ck happened) may keep you closer to home then you want, so might as well make the best of it.

I'm sure I say things, now and then that would irritate some puzzie's ears, as I say things like I see it, and don't 'Sugar Coat' nuth'n just to placate someone.
Heck, I stayed in the Facebook's 'corner' for months at a time, till I finally figured out Facebook is home of the 'Left' and got the hell out.
Texas never had many Train tracks, maybe 1/20th of the tracks that y'all have up North. Heidi, being born in Ohio, and moving with her family to Texas when she was I believe 4, is a Freak'n Train (Steam) Fanatic, and if she ever sees a Steam Train, like around Durango, Colorado, she just Has to Ride the sumbitch, and the Pups and I pick her up at the next town. She and her family went all the way to Ogden, Utah a few months ago to see 'Big Boy' a Huge Steam Engine we saw guys working on it in Wyoming a few years ago. The 'Bash' in Utah was to commemorate the 'Driving of the Golden Spike'. But, Rail Trails around here are Nil.......
I believe I can find some places to ride and tow our pups without having to get out on the highways, if Not, we probably will wait till we find a place. I will be Itching to Go, as soon as we receive our bikes. I already have a Pro Bike Mechanic to assemble them, so they will be in Warranty.

Jeez, I Have No Earthly Idea how to remove my email address from my post, but I completely understand what you are saying and certainly would like to. If you know how I can go about removing it, please inform me.
I'm sure I say things, now and then that would irritate some puzzie's ears, as I say things like I see it, and don't 'Sugar Coat' nuth'n just to placate someone.
Heck, I stayed in the Facebook's 'corner' for months at a time, till I finally figured out Facebook is home of the 'Left' and got the hell out.
Texas never had many Train tracks, maybe 1/20th of the tracks that y'all have up North. Heidi, being born in Ohio, and moving with her family to Texas when she was I believe 4, is a Freak'n Train (Steam) Fanatic, and if she ever sees a Steam Train, like around Durango, Colorado, she just Has to Ride the sumbitch, and the Pups and I pick her up at the next town. She and her family went all the way to Ogden, Utah a few months ago to see 'Big Boy' a Huge Steam Engine we saw guys working on it in Wyoming a few years ago. Go up to the post where you have your email included.

Look at the bottom (put on your reading glasses if you need them, writing is small) and you will see the work 'Edit'. Click it.

Go into your post and delete out the sentence that has your email address within it.

Click 'Save' at the bottom when you're done.

I read most the threads and believe I have seen everywhere you posted - other than making a bunch of laugh so hard our coffee comes out our noses and a few might have blushed a little - you're all fixed up and doing fine.

Haha - just realized that your chosen handle can shorten to 'OP' - which is also the common term used in online forums like this for the person who started the thread we are posting within (commonly known as short form for 'Operator' and they initiated the thread so they have that title given) -

Had a good weekend. I suspect many parts of the U.S. including where you call home good Sir are in for a very interesting week. I have my popcorn ready and will be watching, hoping for the best from our cottage in the north.
