I did the same as a child. I think the sentiment may carry over because walking against traffic is safer. As the video shows, walking and riding are very different.

I always walk against the traffic and ride bikes with the traffic. I thought this was pretty much a given? I do see an occasional homeless biker riding against the traffic, but that's to be expected...

regarding “salmoning” against the flow of traffic, it was actually studied in Palo Alto CA using available records and shown to be between 3.6 and 6.6 times less safe than operating with the direction of traffic.

That data is from the 80's. Distracted driving was not as big a problem then as it is now. Try to keep up with the times. your life depends on it.
