Not certain about removing the rear mudguard with the light, how simple is it?

Don't do it. Only asking for the trouble... and it does rain in Britain!

Yes I'm aware..lol, but I'm looking at replacing the alloy Apollo with something lighter . I'm concerned about the rear light connection..

Welcome. You can always snip it and put shrink tube on the red and black wires. This can be a splice later on.

Why need to reduce weight. On road few kgs won't make much difference. Carrying up and down stairs then yes.
