Hello from upstate New York

Hello all, I recently purchased a new Trek Allant +7s and am getting into cycling more as I work a desk job and recently turned 50 -- I need more exercise! Just wondering if anyone else lives in the Saratoga Springs area and can recommend any good riding spots for recreation. I'm originally from NJ so I don't know the areas as well as the locals. Right now I can do rides about 16-25 mile range before my ass is killing me, but will likely improve on that.

The Erie Canalway Trail isn't too far and it's always a good ride:

Go to the home page of the above link and search on "New York" for other rides in your area.

Welcome to the forum and to Saratoga. Lots of places to ride near you. Saratoga Springs State Park, Saratoga National Park, Ballston Lake Trail, Zim Smith Trail, Mohawk River Canal Trail. Do an internet search for starting and ending points.

The Saratoga Battlefield is a must, a great and safe ride on a one way road with a bike lane for a good bit of it About 11 miles if you go around all the side loops. Tons and tons of history. The bike clubs do evening rides during the week on various days.

Zim Smith trail has just been extended three more miles right into Mechanicville. The new section is non rail-trail, which means it has some hills, swoops and turns and is very lovely and far more interesting than the northern end. The Champlain path is being extended northwards into Mechanicville and when that section opens you’ll be able to go from Ballston Spa village all the way into Waterford and then on to Albany, though Watervliet will still be on (safe) streets.

The Warren County Bikeway from Hudson Falls through Glens Falls to Lake George is another winner. Again, not a rail trail, all paved, but with some decent hills and beautiful riding through a forest as you get closer to Lake George. It pops out of the woods right at the million dollar beach.

Right across the Hudson into Washington County are tons of wonderful gravel roads going through farm country all over the place. Schuylerville out to and around Lake Cossayuna and back is a nice trip, many ways to do it. Mosquito Swamp Road (no kidding) is a great dirt road, pure joy on a gravel style bike.

Saratoga Lake itself is a very pretty ride, other than all those people trying to kill you the whole way. Very little or no shoulder and too many people not paying attention especially on the weekend in the summer, but it certainly ain’t boring!

I visited the battlefield museum a few years ago, I didn't recall seeing a bike path. I will have to check that out. Thank you for the other suggestions I will definitely check them out.

Look on Google maps for Saratoga National Historical Park. Its due east of Saratoga Lake. That's where all the action occurred.

I took my bike to the Saratoga Battlefield today, it was a nice ride. A little hot and buggy but that's where the electric motor helps to get up to speed so the bugs don't bother you as much. Took a few pictures. They had a pretty cool bike fix it station out on the trails.

That bike is really nice looking in that color. I’ve taken several pics by those cannons!

Nice to have that whole e thing on that hill after the bridge, isn’t it?

Yes it's a pleasure to ride. I'm looking into the Glens Falls canal trail maybe tomorrow if it doesn't rain.

The trail from Hudson Falls (good place to start is the ice cream joint right on the Main Street) goes over to Glens Falls, then you have a few blocks to pick up the Warren County Bikeway up to Lake George. Goes right by Coopers Cave brewery! Not a bad spot to stop at all.

I did 34 miles today on the Allant +7s and had half a battery left. I started in Queensbury and parked near Coopers Cave Brewery and followed the trail up to Lake George and tooled around there a bit, then I came back and stopped at Coopers Cave Brewery very cool by the way that it is right on the bike trail. I had some wings and a pint of ale.. I really wanted another but had to finish my bike ride lol.. I then went the other way on the trail and followed the Feeder canal all the way down to the left side. Then I came back up and had ice cream at the place next to Coopers Cave Brewery. I had a good time I chatted with people along the way and rode a bit of ways with some other bikers.
