Hi everyone,

New to the forum and just thought I´d say hi. Me and my family of four (soon five) gave up our car 1.5 years ago and switched completely to using bikes and ebikes. I ride a Tern GSD and Load 75 and my partner a Packster 40. We have had about 10 000 kilometers of mostly problem free riding so far and hope for many more. Overall this solution has worked extremely well for us :)

Cheers

Howdy from Texas. I can see how your solution can work for urbanized living. Good for you. People who have gone your way can always rent a car or van from time to time if needing to travel any real distance. And you lot have those wonderful trains too. Can you tell us more about how your plan works for you? Thanks :)

Thanks Scott. When I first proposed getting rid of the car my idea was received with some scepticism. However, in retrospect things have worked out very well and now no-one seems to have any regrets. The boys (in their early teens) quickly noticed that using their bikes to go to hobbies and friends brings more freedom than having to ask for a ride. The dog much prefers riding in the bike trailer than in the car, and transporting large or heavy items has not yet been a problem with the cargo bikes. We commute about 17km (return trip) to work each day, sometimes visit my parents summerhouse which is 90 km from here, and have even been to my own summerhouse which is about 400 km away, by bike. Obviously some things take longer to accomplish this way, but it also brings adventure and lets us experience much more along the way :)
And as you say, for the long trips there is always the option of taking public transport or lending a car from one of our parents.
