Knowing squat about KT and the listed controllers I’m interested in feed back

i have one of their motors. Nice little motor.

Tom, the display I prefer, is the LCD-3. The other popular display, because it's a sharp looking color display, is the LCD-8. The issue I have with the color (other than the fact it's a couple bucks more) is it won't do anything the LCD-3 won't do, and it WILL wash out a little in direct sunlight. LCD-8 upside is that it's a little easier to configure/make programming changes. The user interface is updated a bit as compared to the LCD-3.

Regarding the controller, it's an older design that results in what I call a rat's nest of wiring and connectors in the controller proximity. Any more, I favor the WP (waterproof) types using the "waterproof" connectors. MUCH MUCH tidier install as it uses a 1t4 cable to move many of the connectors up into the handlebar area. Like this one:

Controllers may, or may not have a VERY light duty "light" wire, that's switched using the "up" arrow. The fact they don't bother fusing this output wire, and the fact it's got such a very low capacity (.1a or so) leave many, myself included, wondering about the value (is it even worth messing with?). If you want to take the trouble to fuse this wire, and use it to control/switch a relay on/off, THEN you'd have something. If this wire is something you're interested in, pay attention to what you are ordering when sourcing it! It cannot be added after the fact, or repaired if blown.....

Buying the PAS sensor, the throttle, brake handles, et all in a very inexpensive bundle like greenbikekit is offering, is an excellent way of guaranteeing that the ends will all match when going rat's nest style controller. The waterproof 1t4 plan assures a certain amount of compatibility, especially when updating an existing system that's already using waterproof accessories.

Good luck on the project!

Thanks Al. It’s me trying to assist a local fellow trying to do install kits as a business. A retired fellow. He’s buying to high but hasnt, apparently, enough cash flow to buy an MOQ of kits at dealer pricing. Making his desired $350 margin making a install $1350. Of course the most frequent response to pricing is, “ I can buy a bike on Amazon for less...”

Cleaning my home shop I found a KT display. Must be an eval sample. I don’t remember buying one, but I‘ll have to look again to see if I can figure which version and what ever I had in mind. That’ll be a challenge.

My response might be related to quality. It's going to be really tough to beat a KT that's been set up properly. Then there's support, but you know that.

Somebody building/converting (semi custom) bikes shouldn't be trying to compete with Amazon bikes when it comes to sales. He could do FAR better saying when you can't get your Amazon bike working, and have nobody to take it to/talk to to get it fixed, come back, and we can discuss a few options. Some of those bikes (most?) might make great projects for KT conversions. As you know, not many people are going to be up for a total electronics swap, using only the battery and motor over again. If he's looking for a 350 dollar margin, that might be a bit much for an afternoon, or even a couple of afternoons work - but maybe not?

I think parts to do most KT conversions are going to be 150 or less, especially when he figures out where to get them (maybe less than 100?). When he's done a few of these, they shouldn't involve much more than 4-6 hours to do (tops). Add a couple hours for having to deal with the customer, and how much does he think he would need to come out ahead?

Is he doing this because he needs the money, or because he's looking for some way to make some mad money while giving him something to do? -Al

For clarity no one is trying to compete with Amazon, it’s a cry heard daily if you take shop calls or have requests fro installed prices. If I had a nickel...

Thankd, but your preaching to the choir hear. I assure you that’s been well discussed!

He’s retired and excited to have something’s to do and some made money.
The fellow has a lot to learn. And it’s keeping me sharper. A big part of support is teaching him how to research builds and effective googling. I’m amazed by how many fellows our agevthst have had computers for z couple of decades but have poor search skills.

Over seven years of support calls I’ve amassed a pretty extensive database. But weaker on the hub motor side with only 10-12 hub motor builds. I’m getting close to handing it over. For now he’s very mechanically inclined and motivated but in a small Minnesota city, but on a fantastic recreational River and beautiful bike trail.

Well if he’s paying for liability insurance and wanting to build some inventory AND offer warranty I think $250 I’d more realistic IF there were at least a 20% margin on components. I’m encouraging learning wheel building.

Length of your season may come into play too. A major trail like that can be a huge draw.

Sorry for reviving an old thread but Im about to give up on my Brainpower controller as I can only get the wheel to spin when I hold the "C" button the screen lol. Where is the best place to buy a KT kit from, im worried ebay or others might be knockoffs.

There are literally hundreds (thousands?) of KT suppliers. Usually they will show the manf tag w/ratings in one of their pics. Serial should start with KT.

I generally use Amazon or Ebay, and check est. delivery dates. Some can take weeks as they are coming from China, while others have stock that's stateside. Be careful here.... from both a time delay and warranty standpoint.

Thanks! Any recommendations for kits? Looking to run a 350W sensored motor sensorless.

Sadly the supply chain is once again a mess. Caution is in order. If reliable sources like Anna at GBK are out of stock, be cautious with the n00bs claiming stock and shipping.

You want a KT sensorless controller? That would be some of the KT sensorless squarewave models. PSWpower sells them., Here's a 17A model. If you study the pictures, there's no Hall connector. They don't say it's sensorless, but in the past they would have a note.

.
I've used a sensorless controller on a regular motor before. It was a KT brand. Had no problem starting up on throttle, which I believe is one of their quirks. Some say the wheel has to move slightly to startup but I never had that issue.
.
You will need or want a KT display. You can get that at pswpower or elsewhere.
.
I just ordered a 20A sensored controller from PSWpower. It will be $33 shipped, about the best price I know of. I expect it to ship and get here within 3 weeks. . I've orderd quite a few controllers and motor kits from PSWpower. They ship fast. If you do not order in the next few days, the Year of the Rabbit will happen on Jan 21, and China shuts down for at least two weeks
.
Another supplier is topbikekit.com, but I don't like his shipping. but to be fair he uses DHL. I;, getting the pswpower controller via HK post for $12 shipping.
