Got Called a "Cheater" by Another Cyclist

What?...you don't like MTV Unplugged?;)
I think you can blame Dave Matthews for that term. While I admit smokin´ spandexters is a
lotta jollies, We need the entire cycling community to unite, roadies, gassers, & ebikers, et al.
Why hell, why not include skateboards & pogo sticks? Travel other than by cars should be safe
from cars.

Sadly I am not the originator of that term. It fits with me though...

Golf carts, horse and buggy, recombinants, delivery bikes, etc.

When it comes to medicine, I know nothing, but I think it's a miracle that you can get back on. One small step at a time.
A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing. I’m a foot surgeon (podiatrist) so knowing a bit more than average about all of this didn’t exactly make it easier or less anxiety producing.

After the strokes, the doctor came in and talked about the procedure to put heart stents in my brain. It was a relatively new procedure, just out of the experimental phase. He said I had a one in five chance of not waking up from the procedure and though there was hope of improvement with the procedure, there were no guarantees.

I’m still kicking.

Say 'I'm still riding...'

Would FIFY but there is no strikethru on my tablet

I'm curious what or who exactly one in "cheating" by riding an e-bike?

if you aren't in a race or other competition, who is getting cheated?

seems some people have their common sense in their ass.

First time I get called a cheater I'll ask them if they own a car? In the same vein, isn't a car cheating too?
I don't own a car and haven't for years, I'm sure not going to apologize for my e-bike.
I've had 3 strokes and a pulmonary embolism. My lungs are useless. I can only ride my acoustic bike on the flats. Screw them.

My wife tells me to say, "Who am I cheating?"
The big issue I find is total ignorance.
A LOT of uneducated persons who think they know what an e-bike is have this illusion that it's like a scooter......wheeeeeee, just twist the throttle and you don't need to do a darn thing but sit.
(sure, we know that some bikes have throttles but that's not the point here)
When I have to explain that if you don't pedal, nothing happens. I usually say something like, "It's Viagra for your legs."
Then the interest starts.
I got my 1st e-bike 4 years ago. I thought I was going to die after riding (and yes pedaling with assistance) after 2 or 3 miles.
Fast forward to today and I've lost 45 lbs., feel better than I've felt in 50+ years (yes, just turned 70), on my 5th e-bike (I like newer, better, different, changes, so I try different ones) and the best part is my average ride is between 25-32 miles a day (weather permitting). 90% of the time in Eco mode tweaked with Blevo at 25%.
Who am I cheating? Life.

I wonder why all the discussion on what some random D_bag has to say..
I typically reply with something like... "So's your wife" .. and forget about it before the song playing on the radio ends.
Only if he said something like... "Be real, ride an acoustic" would I care.
Then I'd run him off the road and beat him bloody with my bike lock 🙃

Ah well, in the grand scheme of things, we already wear clothes to protect our frail bodies, corrective lenses for vision, society produces our goods and farms our food for us, we take medicine to stop our internal systems from self destructing, so what's one more "cheat" on the pile? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Use of a motor is the obvious answer. I wonder if single speed bike riders called other riders cheaters when they started riding multi geared bikes.
You're not cheating anything . Can anyone even explain what it is you are cheating ? You're able to ride in taller gears thus go faster. Gearing you wouldn't be able to maintain as long or maybe at all without Juice . So who is it cheating . You're making the same number of revolutions to cover the same Miles as on a regular bike . You're just getting more speed . So same as someone who has big enough leg muscles to ride the taller gear . It's like you have his legs . Now if you use a throttle . Yeah that's cheating . But in the same respect I know riders who are in such bad shape . Were it not for occasional throttle assistance . Thy wouldn't be riding at all .

What exactly are E-Bikers Cheating on ? Speed ? Distance ?
For people who spent years building up fitness to attack a hill and ride fast, I'm guessing its a bit of "cheating because someone bought a bike that lets them skip all that" sort of mentality. The response is obviously that it isn't a race; the fact that my mediocre fitness and ebike gets me up a hill faster than them doesn't really mean anything, any more than someone driving a car up the hill faster than them makes any difference. My serious roadie friends refer to it as "Cat 6 racing" (meaning its mostly people who don't have the skills to actually race that go out and try to race random people on roads and trails and get butthurt about losing).

Just ride your own ride. And make sure you upload to strava as an ebike so you aren't screwing up leaderboards for people who do care about that sort of thing.

Yikes!
As I say to myself, "strike acoustic from vocabulary."

Not sure what you are getting at > I switch back and forth from generic to ebike . I don't bother with strava or any of that . Isn't there a Wahoo or something similar in name ?

I use a Garmin Venu with the Connect App. I don't upload to any social media, i.e. Strava, Facebook, etc. I only compete with my yesterday. The Venu and App have all the stats I could ever possibly want and a whole lot more. I can also see how some of my stats stack up anonymously against other users in several age range groups. For instance I average more steps in a day than 81% of other users in my age group. Funny stat, I average more steps than 83% of males 29 to 34:eek: Kids! My 4 week average is 160 miles in steps. Cycling tracking is great! Good GPS. I've been using Garmins and the App for about 5 years, so I compete with myself over years of stats.

Not my video, but a good summary of the app and the stats you can collect.
