Garmin Edge (old vs. new)

I’ve got an old (ancient as far as tech goes) Edge 800. I believe it was initially released in 2011. I’ve been looking at the new 1040 but it has so many features I’ll never use I’m wondering if it’s worth the $$$.

In all honesty, the only benefit it likely has for my general mapping purposes is the larger (sharper?) screen (which is significant as my eyes are getting old) and more accurate multi-band GPS.

Would an 11-12 year old Edge 800 actually still be “competitive” with an Edge 1040 if it’s primarily just used for mapping?

I would look for a 1030+ on sale then. I don't use a lot of the features but the battery lasts the longest the beeps are loud so it works well with my radar. it has temp and will show you the grade you climbing.

Yeah, I’ve been considering that also. I guess it comes down to how much is the 1040’s enhanced speed and the multi-band GNSS is worth to me.

If you can live without all the bells & whistles of the Edge 1030+ and 1040, another option is the slightly older Edge 1030. You can get a factory refurbished unit for around $220:

It's still a big improvement over your 800.

It seems like the Hammerhead Karoo 2 is what the Cool Kids are using now.

About the only negative I've been seeing in reviews of the above is the battery life.

I have not used mine for awhile. I liked how it worked but it had a lot of bugs at the time. temp was like 5 degrees off and still is from what I have heard. it was a pain to go into a store with because you had to fully power it off to do so. then it takes forever to boot up. it still does. it takes more effort to end and save a ride. this is just nitpicking but my Garmin still works so it gets used more. it much easier to upload maps to and its faster at connecting to ANT devices. when I first got it it would not turn on or off the radar. but that changed and it does both as long as you end the ride. if you just turn it off it i9f wont turn the radar off. yes battery life is not as good. I think overall I like it better than the gamin but the Garmin is more practical for short or interrupted rides.

Why not a Wahoo ELEMNT Roam (v2)? As good as the Garmin, a way easier to configure (as it is done from the smartphone app). A way less expensive.
