eMTB Options For 2024

I may have posted this previously...but it came up in my feed and it's worth a watch if you're in the market for an eMTB.

My brother's new ride (and my old bike ready to go home).

Giant Talon 29 E+
Clearly entry level, but will be an excellent introduction.

Shimano Alvio is what the Giant docs say - but it was delivered with a Microshift Advent Group..
The 9 speed on the Advent came as 11-42T, which had a better range than the Alvio would have (11x36).
An 11-46T is available and they are rather inexpensive at around $50.

Supply chain issues continue... and my car needs a wash!

The new norco vlt's look to be getting announced today. Not all countries websites have been updated, but setting canada seems to gave a decent number of options.

I like the idea of buying the battery seperate and being able to option different sizes, pitty the smallest is still over 500 wh

They have expanded the lower priced options by adding the fluid - 140 mm travel

BUT - these things are getting huge! Long chainstays, huge wheelbases, the specs on the medium would have been a large two years ago. I was hoping they would keep an agile trail option like their 27.5 scene , but I guess the market has spoken - everyone buys bigger :(

That's a really interesting cassette option - 11-46 with a nice and solid chain, what does the shifting feel like?

Time for some new pedals... LOL
I sure like Giant bikes - that's a great looking example, and I'm sure it rides like a dream.
If this thing sees mostly pavement, look at those Schwalbe Hurricanes. I put a set on the wife's Stance and they're just killer. Even more surprising is how well they work on dirt!
I have Icon (R) and Rekon (F) on my OCCAM. Gee, I just never ride that darn bike though. :(

Yep was just going to post that. AND prices got bigger...OUCH!

When we get out together, I'll ask (and listen to his shifts). He's a retired Engineer with many years working in Quality control. If it's clunky, I'll certainly hear about it.

The difficulty is trying to compare lemons with oranges.

As far as I can tell, the " reasonable" price / performance point has shifted down in their models , whilst all the prices have shifted up slightly. Eg I would probably be looking at a sight a1 in 2021 @ $7600 oz retail, that's about the same spec level as a sight a2 now @$8500 oz - marginally lower spec beakes (420 down from 520) , forks are arguably slightly lower spec ( gold ebike vs yari - pretty close) , but you get more power / lighter weight from the ep8 vs e8000 , a slightly bigger battery? In a the current environment, a 10% price increase for a similar bike - I shrug my shoulders and feel sorry for the poor mongrels having to work in the factories. But then I get cranky and reflect on the past 18 months of working throughout this sh1t and how my take home $ have effectively gone backward. Being cranky makes me feel like retail therapy....so Im REALY glad that my spec sl comp carbon is better spec and was cheaper than that porky norco a2 !!!!!

If the Sight A1 is anything like my 19 Sight C3 its a complete joy to ride.
I can't ride for 3 months and it kills me to walk by it in the garage.

Look after your 19 sight - norco have moved away from agility / playfull and seem more interested in stability. Pray the e8000 dies under warranty and you get an ep8 replacement?

I was hoping they would offer something like the sight 27.5 but with an ep8 - basically a full power version of my levo sl. Instead, they seem to have gone further down the path the sight 29 started - heavy, stable monster bike. They will be fantastic gravity bike - unbeatable uphill and very stable down. Not much fun for mere humans on gentle flowy x country :(

Feedback is simple and in one word. BUTTER...
Very quiet and very smooth. Mind you this is urban riding, not thrashing it on technical singletrack.

Found something going on at the Olympics worth watching... :p
Here's a nice recap on the XC bikes that went - some pretty cool bikes...

Wife and I were watching and she exclaims "That looks hard" as they pump up the hills. I said yeah, that's why we have ebikes. LOL
These riders are hardcore. 👍

And the main event from a couple of days ago, including a big crash for the rider from Netherlands...
There's an NBC vid up there of the whole race, but they block posting elsewhere so here's an alternate:

The champ appeared to be running an electronic prototype suspension.
