I am looking forward to the arrival of my 8Fun 500 W 48 v mid drive kit. It was ordered from EM3ev. This will be installed on a Trek Pure Sport vintage 2010. I took note and ordered a cockpit mounted electric brake which I had not seen before in my research phase of this adventure. It appears to be a motor cut off switch. When needing to shift I assume this will eliminate gear mashing. What I don't know is it a press and hold cutting power while still pedaling to make the shift, and then release to resume pedalec assist, or does this cut power with the need to reset the desired assist level? I suppose I would discover the answer at first use, but it would be nice to know prior to the maiden trip. There will be enough new experiences to process. Insert grin here.

Going to assume that you are referring to the micro switch on the brake lever that cuts the motor when the brake is activated.. from what I have read, just pull your brake lever enough to engage the micro switch and thus cut the motor, BUT not enough to engage the brake.. change gear, then release the lever... if you have ever ridden a motorbike with a clutch, just use it in a similar way..

Lectric Cycle is 'rebranding' the BBS02 and offering it with some enhancements. I think their brand will be e-Rad. Anyway, it looks like they posted a YouTube video of a shift sensor for their versions of the mid-drive.

If you are pedaling up a steep hill (I.e., 15% grade) at a slow speed (I.e. 5 to 10mph), do you lose a significant amount of momentum when cutting power to shift? I imagine a loss of momentum would be unpleasant ?

For most people using the PAS system on the BBS02 they have had to get used to just barely pulling in the front brake (enough for the motor to disengage) in order to up shift without putting serious strain on their chain and risking breakage. Paul from em3ev is now selling a Giant Green Button™(thank god it’s not red or I’d HAVE to press it) for $6 that connects to the ebrake sensor and shuts off the PAS while the button is held down to facilitate up-shifting without risking a damaged chain.
Mike, I suppose you need to plan ahead as much as possible. Even on my road bike I need to get into the proper gear well before crunch time which is the sound of missed opportunity.
