YIKES!! I planted scores. of cactus and have had those barbed glochids embedded in my knees. Each and every one needs a hard pull with pliers to remove. Bits are often left under the skin and often react and get infected.

I have a good friend who took a hard bail at speed while riding asphalt (road bike) in the desert a few years back. She panicked in a curve and washed out the front tire, skidded down the tarmac resulting in a severe case of road rash, and then landed in a cactus bush with sort of similar results. Some days you're the hammer...
