Dilemma

No matter where it’s made as long as not in China
She going to have a hard time living without a lot of major appliances soon when she needs a replacement. Along with generic medicines, chicken tenders, clothes especially jeans etc.....Unless she likes $150 jeans.

Or a iphone or ipad or anything with a battery, sad to say.

@Cappy, so e-bikes of the Big Three are not made in China, same with Haibike, Riese & Mueller (both of Germany), BH (Spain) for example.

On the other hand the electronics will be Chinese in any case. It is quite important how the brand controls the manufacturing quality. For example, Specialized is a U.S. brand, the R&D and engineering for Turbo e-bikes are done in Switzerland, the aluminium frames are Taiwanese and who knows where the e-bikes are actually being assembled.

I'd toss in there Gepida too. Not well know in the USA but big in Europe.

Would we really want the electronics made here ? This BBC article makes me wonder if American or Europeans would tolerate this.

I am old enough to recall when things like my first drumset made in Japan were junk. Then Yamaha made the finest drums ,even better than Ludwig and Gretsch and Rogers and Slingerland etc. Nowadays after Yamaha has become the industry standard they have moved their factory to China. Why? Billions of cheap labourers who quickly gain the needed skills to build to required specifications. The Western world will have to be satisfied to be the designers. It seems inevitable to me that sooner or later all the best stuff will come from China along with all the worst stuff. Resistance is futile. We are the Borg.

If not the Chinese South Asian production, most of Americans or Europeans would walk barefoot nowadays, too.
We didn't walk barefoot before 80s when China's rise began.
Hadn't everybody moved manufacturing to China, it would've been Chinese who would walk barefoot nowadays. Which is fine by me, - Covid-19 would have a really low chance of spreading across the globe on foot :)
Lower standards of living would result in lower Chinese domestic demand and consequently lower prices on most raw materials as well.

I just posted that because this could turn into a China bashing thread
I have enormous respect for the Chinese people. They remind me of coal miners from Wales or Pennsylvania in the fifties. They know what they do will eventually kill them, but it lifts their families out of extreme povertty, so they do it anyway. As Gandhi once said "Poverty is the worst form of pollution". However their politicians and media are the same kind of POS we have in the west.

This is not really turning out to be a China bashing thread, but providing some sarcastic reality check for some ignorant people that think that buying 100% American is a reality in today's times. If everything were sourced and built in the U.S. the price will go up exponentially for most consumer products that we take for granted everyday. Sadly, you can't have your cake and eat it too. 🍰
