Just above the front light is the company's logo. Above that is a series of numbers stamped into the head tube. If your bike is stolen and then recovered, this number might come in handy if your have to prove ownership.

There is a registration group here in Portland, OR called "Project 529" that keeps records for those who enroll their bikes. It is available to local law enforcement to check possible stolen bikes. There may be something similar in your community, so maybe ask bike shops or other riders, or police if they know of anything in your area.

When I lived in Berkeley, they had a mandatory bike registration. They stamped your frame and issued you a license plate fixed with a lead seal.

Bike theft was rampant yet they had a recovery rate of better than 90%.

The wild part was that they treated your riding of your bike the same as your car. Ride on the sidewalk? You got a ticket as if you drove your bike on the sidewalk. Ride the wrong way down a one way street, yup, same as your car.
