My converted Mongoose was designed as a hybrid mountain bike with 21 speeds and a 42 tooth chainring. I had found myself pedaling like a madman when going over 17 mph. I brought it to the lbs and had them replace the sprocket with a 48 tooth sprocket/chainring. What a difference! No more high speed pedaling. 
It only took 4 years to figure that out.
