Case study: converting an e-bike with a BBS01

Here is a blog post I wrote about my experience converting a pedal bike with a Bafang BBS01 mid-drive kit motor. I wrote it for a DC area e-bike group for beginners so I don't include my controller settings but I thought I'd share, happy reading!

I think you and I are the rare bread riding 36V BBSxx series motors. I still ride my 2014 36V 350W BBS01(A). But when it fails there are very few repair parts available.

Nice writeup!

Picked up on your gear sensor comment. Maybe it's because I learned to drive with a column shifter on cars from the 50's, but I never noticed any derailleur or chain banging shifting my bike with a BBS02. Never shift under power, whether car or bike.

For sure operator training works for some, I tried stopping pedalling, gently squeezing the ebrake, then fit a big green button which introduced an additional step I occasionally forgot to press with crunchy consequences  Finally I gave in and had the shop install my 2nd gearsensor...after I broke the first trying to insert a frayed gear cable  But now its on I really appreciate it 😁, thank you to the Czech guy who designed it.

Yeah, in 2018 I jumped on a sale offer from Volton near Chicago and bought an early BBS01b motor core without the light connectors to swap-in if/when the BBS01a I bought from Doug breaks.

I have a NOS 36v 250w. I bought two from a company that gave up on 36v motors. I grabbed two for $100 each. BBS02B. I’m very happy with one installed on a Zizzo folder rated for 300lb rider. Perfect for a bike path.
