Car Rack that attaches to the trunk

Has any one ever tried to use one of those car racks that gets attached to you car trunk? I read/heard that its not advisable to use. But looking that the specs of those on Amazon says the capacity is 2/70lbs. basically 35lbs for each bike. my Ebike is roughly 50lbs. if i only load up with only my ebike it should theoretically it should be fine right? I could even going as bare as taking off front wheel, seat, and battery to reduce the weight. thoughts and/or suggestions?

Nope. Technically it’s only rated for 35lbs per bike slot.
Can you elaborate? It looks like both bike slots are attached to the same bars. Shouldn't 2 bikes would be the same to only 1 bike weighing roughly the sum of the two bikes? Kinda like if a table is rated for 200lbs and you can eight at two 75lb boxes on it or one 150lb box. shouldn't the weight on the table be the same?

The rack might be rated at 70# but what about the vehicle? My brother busted the rear window on his Hyundai Santa Fe with a clip on rack.

There are many forces involved with a bike rack including side and sway load when cornering. It isn't just about bike weight. I'll admit to using a trunk rack to carry my 58# bike but it was a short ride at low speed. I would not recommend using one on a regular basis. E-bikes are expensive and so is a potential lawsuit should an accident occur. Your insurance may not cover either.

No. The rating assumes the weight is distributed across the rack‘s two bike slots. Having all the weight at only one of the bike positions is not the same thing. If in doubt, contact the racks manufacturer. Also, do a search. This has been discussed numerous times on this forum.

Oh I didn't think about that. Guess I just assumed it would be able to do handle the weight. Thanks for the heads up.

Really? I just assumed the failure point was at the joint where the pressure from the weight would be. Wish I could find someone that scienced the heck out of this lol. This just keeps gnawing my brain that it should work. My brain keeps going back to dumb examples like "well if you could deadlift 50lb plates on each side, you can also do two 25lb plates on each side with same effort." Lolol

I did see that EMBN video about transporting your ebike and they did mention the trunk rack, but they only skimmed it. Saying it was a bit wobbly. Wish that they actually just said "screw it, lets see how well this works with extensive use and make a video out of it. Because not everyone has the strength to put it on the car roof, or has a hitch, or a vehicle big enough." Lol

Sorry about posting on an already discussed subject, but I did do a search. Only things that ever came up was the rack on the bike. Figured if it was posted, then it should be enough time at this point that maybe trunk ranks have changed a bit more it would warrant another discussion, seeing how buried it was. Guess not lol.

Ay! Thanks for the links. Gave them all a look. They only REAL help was the first one where the guy actaully tried the trunk rack. It looks like it works. A few comments that seemed a little off like how every single part was rated for 35lbs, like the boles and straps, which makes no sense. That would mean the entire thing would collaps just on two 35lbs bikes alone, which i was made for. The other links just sort of devolved into "get a hitch rack". I mean, i can understand. heavy and expensive bike. you want to use the sturdiest gear to protect it and others around you. but lets be real. we aren't able to be in the same situation and use the same solutions everyone else is able to use. just like that guy that doesn't own a car and rents whenever he needs to. trunk rack is perfect to him. We aren't all string enough to lift an ebike over our head to put on a roof rack, some might just be leasing a car and aren't allow to modify a car to add a hitch, and we don't all own a hatchback/suv/trunk to throw our ebikes into. Yeah, sound like a small niche, but everyone has an option to transport. Just gotta take it nice and slow, and get strong reliable products from reliable name brands.

Thanks again and sorry again for creating a post of the same subject.
