Bought another photon 3 wks ago and this morning it quit working. 305 miles on this one. F
irst one I got from BMW this one came from John N/O. I don`t blame these guys by no means. This is definitely it for me with cyc. I thought maybe the second one I bought would be trouble free and the first ones problems were a thing of the past. Wrong. I will talk with the seller about sending it in for repairs. Sad that the cheapest motor out there continues to be the most reliable. This is almost enough to turn me to gas bikes and kick the battery junk to the curb. The sad thing is I like the e bikes but the integrity is not there. And the cost of batteries is ridiculous. When you add it all up it just isn`t worth it to me.

Sorry to hear your troubles with the Photon and thank you for sharing the experience. I considered a Photon for a short while but turned back towards a Bafang BBS02 after hearing of issues with CYC.
The BBS02 is still young with only 1000 miles but it runs flawlessly and is extremely quiet too.

I'm a bit surprised CYC hasn't worked out the reliability issues with their Photon motor. Having said that, CYC has a habit of using their customer base as beta testers.

Sorry to hear yours stopped working so soon.

My Photon has 2k miles and is used every other day without any issues. I dont use a throttle on this setup (not required and just causes motor to overheat). I also always monitor the temps while riding

I also have run two BBSHD with a combined 10k miles or so.

Maybe a BBSHD would be a better fit for you, while the cadence based assist is nowhere as nice as the torque based assist on the photon, the BBSHD is bulletproof and fast, especially if your a throttle jockey (you mention wanting to go to gas bikes)

I have 2 photons 1 stealth gen 3 and a cyc pro gen 2. I am no stranger to cyc. I have 1 to seven dmo2, 5 bafang bbso2, 2 bafang bbshd and 3 bafang hub drive units mixed between 500w and 1 750watt. Stranger to ebikes I am not. disgusted with the photon I am. Also on a previous post I mentioned the first photon failed as well. No problem with the stealth or pro cyc`s. One of the bafang bbso2 had a controller failure. The toseven bbso3 had component problems out the gate but has been great after the bad display and speed sensors were replaced. Just mentioning my experiences so that maybe someone will do some checking before laying down a grand on a motor of a particular brand and model. I am quite aware of the torque vs cadence difference. I have built a lot of ebikes for people that use them for transportation along with riding single track. I am also aware on what causes wear on them related to gear ratios and throttle use. I will not comment any further or debate the product. Like I said just a heads up as to the reliability problem still exist.
