Both water bottles keep falling off my Superdelite

I am so sorry if this has been asked but searches of water bottles bring back hundreds of results of which I read the first five. My water bottles on both sides will jump off the pegs whilst road riding if I go over a bump. Strangely it does not seem to do it off road, but a smallish pothole will have me turning round to fetch it. I do have the front rack which moved the bottles out slightly but I cannot really see a way to tighten them.

I would really appreciate any help.

I often use a strap. Slightly larger diameter bottles with an indentation for a cage can help also.

FWIW, I just bought a side entrance cage as my new Rail 5 doesn’t have room to pull it straight out. I hope it works.

I assume you are talking about the Fabric water bottles (they are cageless) since they are the ones R&M uses and the only ones that fit the mounting pins on the Delite bikes. I have the standard size that came with the bike and a larger 22oz insulated Fabric for summer use and have found them both secure. I have done very bumpy trail riding and never lost a water bottle.

All you need to do is tighten the bolts that hold the little mushroom mounts in place. When you snug them up further the narrow "stem of the mushroom" gets thicker and the bottle has to be pressed on a bit tighter, making it less likely to jump off when hitting a bump. Once it is tight to the normal level, snug it down further in small steps, checking how tight it is getting with the bottle. When it feels good and snug but does not need to be forced on give it a go on a ride. This actually works with no straps needed.

I will try that right now. Last night it fell off just going down the road on some very innocuous tarmac, but two hours off road they stayed put. I think it hits a resonant frequency with full bottles, so by the time I hit the off road I have drunk some.

You are lucky. Mine cracked. Had to throw them away.

Sadly no. The replacement pegs that came with th e front rack are not the same material as the original ones. The longer new pegs are of a very hard shiny plastic and the originals were slightly squishy. I did try some replacement bottles and they very weakly click into place, the usual bottles just flop into place. I am beginning to wonder if the pegs for the front rack are slightly out of spec. The bottle instructions carefully state that one should ensure that the bottles click into place and there is zero clicking going on. I did try and torque up the pegs but it sounded like it was hitting the end of the screw thread in the frame and not putting more pressure on the peg. I lost another bottle last night and one the night before. I am tempted to take off the front rack and go back to the original pegs. I really would be interested in hearing from someone with the front rack and see if their bottles click into place. I certainly appreciate your help.

Out of interest, do you have the front rack? Breaking the bottles is really tedious.

That was so kind of you and really helpful. First of all, what a gorgeous bike, love the colour. That grips like mine originally did, with a firm clunk. No it just drops in under its own weight all the way to the bottom. The only explanation I can think of is that I have faulty pegs. Even with my new bottles there is only the slightest click.

ride was good but underestimated how cold it was (3 Celsius) and wasn’t really attired correctly.

hope you get the mounts sorted as pretty handy way to take water on rides

Try a hydration pack, warm water is better than cold water , back in my "right of way" clearing days, the first drink of ice water set the stage for intense thirst the rest of the day, 10 hours of fighting the slopes is pretty intense.

I did not know that. I have been cycling with the temps in the mid 30s so I fill both bottles with ice and fill up with water. After about thirty minutes I have warm water. After cycling for years with a backpack with my hydration tube it has been such a delite (sic) to have nothing on my back. I am sure I can get some better pegs.

Yes, mine too. The trouble is when I fitted the front rack that kit comes with the longer pegs and they are a hard plastic and a little smaller than the original ones.

I would think the screws are longer, but the pegs would be the same? In any case, your issue with the included Fabric water bottles is exactly why I did not, and will not order the front rack. Well that and the fact I'm a daily rider, not a bike trekker so I don't need that much storage...
