Bike Computer/Speedometer Recommendation for eBike

Hi There - I have a RadCity Expand 5 that doesn't have a digital display. When I was able to ride my road bike I had a CatEye cycling computer. Will wireless cycling computers work with ebikes? Any recommendations or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Yeah, you don’t get a real display with that bike, do you? At least not one that tells you any detail. Hmm...

I’d give Rad a call and see if they can help you. Maybe they have a bespoke display (like the one on the RadRover) that can be connected.

Oh, but certainly anything that you used on a non-electric bike will work fine on an e-bike.

It depends what kind of data that you want and where you want it to come from. If your Cateye gave you ride time, distance, speed, etc. via a wheel and/or cadence sensor, there's no reason why you can't adapt that system to the e-bike. If you want e-bike specific data, like power, range, assistance level, etc., then that most likely will have to come from a wired or wireless display provided by the manufacturer.

Smart bike computers like Garmin and Wahoo can display rider data wirelessly as well, but the drive system has to broadcast it using a standard protocol.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions and tips. Rad is out of stock of the displays for the RadExpand 5 - only have the new, color displays for the + series. I also got a response back from Cateye which I am including here: "our cyclocomputers, both wireless and wired, are not designed to work with E-Bikes since the motor will interfere with the sensors."
Would love to know if anyone has actually been able to use a cycling computer. Thank you

That’s a pretty big surprise (to me) about the Cateye. I wonder what sensor(s) they are talking about. Well, best of luck, salaryman.

CYA-teye

They probably use magnet sensors, and don't want to deal with the support headache when someone with an ebike that alao uses a magnet sensor for speed or cadence puts the CatEye sensor on the same wheel.

I can't imagine it's a problem as long as you are aware of potential problems and mount the CatEye stuff out of the way of any ebike sensors.

Sir BlackHand that was my thought as well. I'm going to try it and report back. Love this community. You guys have been such a great help to me, someone who is so intimated by all things DIY on these ebikes.

Thank you Chazmo! Will report back to this thread if I come up with something.
Kind of surprised Rad doesn’t have something for you, salary… Maybe they want you to buy a RadRover. Well, whatever… 🤷‍♂️

Indeed you should look into Wahoo or Garmin for a solution for your bike, although I’m sure you could get the Cateye to work. I think that gets another “whatever…” 🤷‍♂️

I have a handlebar USB accessory jack on one bike. After I installed it, my wireless computer couldn't get a signal from the wheels. Probably interference from the DC-DC converter inside the accessory, Some ebike displays likely do the same thing,

I have a need for the basic display for speed, distance traveled,
total miles ridden, time etc.
I have the old cats eye display, (2009 yr model), but have to find a 1.50" diameter clamp to fit the new suspension fork, as the old clamp was 1.00" diameter.
Tia,
