BBSHD/BBS02: Stock up on the old stuff while we can?

As we all know, the current motors we all know and love and hack to bits/bytes are being replaced with what so far looks to be a system that is the opposite of what the typical Bafang user is looking for: Incoming is a proprietary system that will kill off all programming tools and may even require a branded proprietary Bafang battery. The word I hear is this motor is intended to be a replacement for the current 'HD and '02 and is not going to be produced alongside them.

Software aside, it looks like the secondary housing has moved inboard - thats a good thing. But also mechanically it eliminates one of the two clamping bolts in favor of a hose clamp that can only be described as ... well. The word I am thinking of is 'appalling'. I have done the hose clamp thing myself on the HD, and its not a bad thing to do (even if it is unnecessary so long as you take care of the BB mounting intelligently) but the way Bafang executed their solution is ... Just. Terrible.

So I am considering stocking up on spares. As in laying away a couple of spare motors. I'm not so much interested in having them for new builds as I am not wanting to switch to a different platform should I lose one of my existing ones.

Anyone else considering - or rejecting - this idea? Thoughts?

Under the "thoughts" heading. Maybe getting feeble of mind, maybe wishful thinking, but I really think it's just going to be a question of time until we have easily used hacked versions of the CANBUS software available.

No knowledge of the battery thing though....

That hose clamp plan is very easily improved on. Not much concern there. I do agree with your thoughts regarding that. It does call in to question the thought process behind releasing something like that.... Not very impressive from a company that I have (had?) a lot of respect for. -Al

my worry is dimensions, does anyone know if the new model will fit into the old cavity on integrated BBSHD frames? i know the fit was pretty snug to start with, this is the type of frame i talking about

I THINK you're looking at an M600 there.

Not going to say they don't exist, but I've never seen an enclosed BBSxx?

No there are absolutely bikes out there with an enclosure meant to hide both your garden variety BBSHD and BBS02. That first one pictured above is a BBSHD if I am not mistaken. I always considered them to be an extremely bad idea because you are enclosing a hot motor inside of its own little SuzyBake oven.

No disrespect meant to the folks who have bought bikes that do this. I just have had quite a lot of experience riding BBSHDs in hot climate and a motor that can have a measured surface temperature of 165 degrees with a nylon gear inside does not need to be shut off from exterior ventilation.

To the contrary: I put heat sinks on mine and in summers like we are having this year they freaking need it.

100% correct! The casing for the BBS02 is smaller, both of the bikes above are BBSHDs! I was warned about possible heat issues before i purchased this bike but at the time i was more concerned with the added protection from water/salt/slush in the winter during my commute. Luckily this is it's 3rd summer and so far its never been more than slightly warm to touch. The other side of the casing is vented on my bike so that helps a little but i have seen these enclosed frames for BBS02s with no venting or hole on either side!

I learned something new today. Thanks!

I get the idea of how that enclosure isn't going to help any heat situation.

The enclosure, if it contacts the motor, might act as a big heat sink and work better than air at 30 feet per second (20 mph) hitting the original BBSHD.

I think the motor does touch the sides of the enclosure but i dont remember if the heat fins on the motor are touching anything, its been a while since i opened it up.

I was goofing off on amazon and i noticed some sellers are already switching to the new motors! This is happening faster than i anticipated!
