Are the hydraulic brake option worth the extra money?

I see Magic cycle offering a combo with a cruiser bike and hydraulic brakes to be added. Are the mechanical brakes on the newest models bad enough to pay an additional 200.00 for the hydraulic? I am 155 pounds and very interested in buying a bike. Input please.

HA ha. I would read "4 piston brake" and expect something exotic, like an upper an lower pair of calipers like on some cars. Instead, they mean a caliper has two pistons on each side, and you have a front/rear. Hence 4 pistons.

Nonetheless, good searching, Timpo. These kits have built in cut off wiring. I bought a pair of Zoom hydraulic brakes w/o the brakes (which I added myself). They do work smoothly, and it's easy to buy/replace new pads. I wonder if the unit you linked come with the hoses assembled and filled.

Is it worth paying $200 to have them already installed, or pay $100 to DIY. Well, depends if the connectors fit, and if you have a use for an extra set of mechanical calipers.

Last summer I had the opportunity to take a short ride on the same bikes as mine (DJ eBikes mountain bike) that this fellow had converted the stock mechanical Tektros the bike came with to Juin (sp?) hybrid hydraulic calipers. The Juins use a hydraulic fluid filled caliper which is activated via the stock cable which makes the conversion a simple swap. He used the stock 160mm rotors as well (also Tektros.) Overall, a significant improvement, but not a "holy sh*t I gotta have them right now. " I imagine the Magicycle with full hydraulic brakes would be a significant improvement and worth the $200 vig, keeping in mind you will have to install them yourself or pay someone else. FULL DISCLOSRE: I'm seriously considering the Magicycle step thru but, like you, I'm not 100% on-board with the $200 Tektros. The Juins would cost me about $162 and I could do the swap myself. And to be honest, the mechanical Tektros on my bike are not bad but the Magicycle does weigh about 25lbs more which is something to consider.

Many brake sets are available with our eBike but buying brake sets alone will be a long wait for some versions. Still supply chain issues galore.

I'd go with the upgrade!
