Amego Infinity: Replacing rear hub motor

A number of people note issues with their Amego Infinity rear hub motors. In my case, the motor is slipping: it supplies power but only up to a certain point when it slips in a way that suggests to me that the internal gearing is damaged. My current plan is to purchase a like-on-like replacement motor. However, in order to install that motor I am told I'll need to have the rear wheel rebuilt: the old motor will be detached from the spokes and the new motor will be spoked in, a process that will cost >$100 at a bike shop. Is it possible instead to remove the old motor from its casing, leaving the casing attached via spokes to the wheel, and then slot in the new motor in its place?

I should note that I own two of these bikes and have connected the slipping motor to the controller on the good bike, which then produces the same result. So I'm sure the issue is in the motor and not the controller or upstream wiring.

You could try Amego who show them on their web site. However, I would call them as the prices look a bit crazy (eg same price for a motor in the wheel as for a bare motor)...Also see they sell gear/clutch assembly if that's what is needed.
 
I've been in touch with Amego who sent me to Leon! Perhaps they thought/knew I'd get a better price from Leon and I guess they didn't want to deal with shipping from CA to US. I opened up the motor and I don't see visible damage to the gear/clutch assembly, which is disappointing because the problem is that the motor loses power/slips once it starts to get much resistance, which I was sure would prove to be the fault of damaged gears.
