Allant +7 spare chain

With all this talk about chain vs belt, I’ve pondered getting a spare just in case. I know the Trek site says it’s a KMC E9S, 9 speed. Any Allant+7 owners gotten one yet?
Where, what size did you go with, cost?

A chain is a consumable that's worth having at home as a spare part as it will wear and need to be replaced eventually. If you're not having any issues with your current chain then I'd recommend replacing it with the same. As for length just match what you currently have. Each link is 1/2 inch long so you can measure rather than counting links. Looks like the E9 comes in 136 links which I would think has you covered and will probably need to be cut to size.

If it's KMC then it should have links with KMC stamped on them, and the neighbouring link the chain model number -> e9 sport - presumably shortened to e9s. You may also want to have a replacement quicklink too, which i think is cl566e.

You will no doubt have to shorten the chain so you'll need a chain breaker tool, as well as chain pliers (you can made do with normal pliers but its a lot easier with the correct tools)

Yeah it’s an e9s. And the QL is the CL566. No e in the stamping.

If you are not going to carry a spare chain with quick link, then at least have a spare link on hand and carry a chain link plier. The one I like is made by wolf tooth and carries two links and doubles up as a pair of tire levers. When you get a flat or break a chain on the road, this tool is priceless.

The other tool you should have in your road kit is a chain link breaker. If you do break a chain you will have to push the pin out on the other side of the broken link in order to put the quick link in.

I have broken 3 chains on the road on my Allant 9.9 in just over 2,000 miles. I am a big and reasonably strong rider, at least for my advanced years. I love the 12 speed drive train but the chain with its thinner side bars is more subject to failure as there is less holding material for the pins. I carry both of the tools above AND a spare chain at all times.

I've always carried a chain breaker. This is the first bike I've had with the quick link. I got some extra KMC quick links for mine the other day. I may buy an extra chain in the future just for a spare but I'm just going to carry a couple quick links and the breaker on the bike.

KMC also makes a less expensive, combination quick link plier/tire iron but it is plastic and much thicker and bulkier and does not carry the spare links.

FYI, Amazon has KMC X9.93 9-speed chains w/Quick Link included on sale right now for $16.10.

I have an old school version that I’m going to test when I get the chain.

I have purchased the above-mentioned 136 link chain on Amazon and shortened it to 123 links with a Park chain tool and quick link. Worked well on my Verve with a new 11-46T cassette. Having replaced my derailleur, I have reverted back to the 11-36T and 118 link chain until I can see if the wider ratio cassette will work with the Deore long cage shadow.
I do carry a few extra links and quick links onboard, as well as a small chain breaker and Park link pliers.
