Tero 3.0 dead on arrival.

Hello everyone,

I purchased a Tero 3.0 online and it arrived Yesterday 26th March, eager and excited I pulled it out the box and built her up, this is where my excitement turned too disappointment though.

I pressed the power button and nothing happened, so slapped it on charge for a few hours thinking the battery was dead. After about 3 hours it beeped and the little screen lit up, giddy like a kid on Christmas day I jumped off the sofa and went over to the bike only to be greeted with a "No Battery, check app" error, I cleared that and then "No motor, check app" appeared, I cleared that and was then greeted with a message that said something along the lines of "Locked please update firmware".

Annoyed and confused I rang the company I bought it off and they adviced me to take it to my local specialized specialist for a firmware upgrade, luckily there is one a couple miles from where I live, so off I went. The lads at the bike shop plugged it in to their diagnostic program to try sort it but for love nor money couldn't get rid of the error messages. They even tried a different battery off one of their store bikes which made no difference, he checked all the cables that ran to the motor and said all was fine and secure and couldn't understand why a new bike would be throwing up those messages, also mentioned he had never actually seen those messages before.

Apart from the errors I previously mentioned there is no other date on the screen, no battery levels or anything, I managed to get the bike to link up to the app, and apart from finding the bike there is no data at all, the battery reads 0%, even though if you take the battery out the bike and press the little button it shows fully charged.

Obviously I'll be ringing the company back in the morning looking for more advice/potentially returning it.

Has anyone else had this with a brand new out the box bike or heard of anyone else having the same issue or am I just unlucky.

Thanks

Nathan

I am not sure how and from who you bought the Tero.
The Specialized policy is either:
  • You order an e-bike at your Specialized LBS or
  • You order the e-bike online at specialized.com and get the delivery to an authorised Specialized LBS (that builds and tests the e-bike before handing it out to the customer), or
  • You order the e-bike at specialized.com, the delivery goes to a Specialized LBS (that builds and tests the e-bike), and then Specialized LBS delivers the e-bike at your door.
If you ordered your Tero in another way, that was asking for trouble.

Could you please elaborate how and where you did order your e-bike?

They are a specialized dealer, I ordered it from their website as they are not local to me. No idea if it was part of their stock or if they ordered it in, took roughly 10 days from order to delivery .

I mean, you need an LBS, L as in "Local". Just return the e-bike while you can!
Besides: If you order an e-bike from the Specialized website, the website tells you what LBS around you are qualified to deliver.

@Green Moss: Can you remember our talk about buying a Specialized e-bike from a remote store?

The company I bought it from sent me to my "local" specialized centre, is 50 minutes drive still classed as local? Ha Anyways, turns out a cable inside the frame failed, they have ordered a new one and hopefully I'll get it back next week. Cheers.

Good to know the reason of the failure has been found!

Not sure how it works where you live but in my country there is an option called "Specialized delivery", so it is the LBS people that come to you with an assembled e-bike and even give you an instruction how to use the e-bike :)

Cheers!
