2025 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

Final ride of a record breaking 2025!

Another nice but rather chilly day, my plan was an easy day this time and just enjoy a nice bike ride without any distractions so no photos! I made my way out to Threemiletown which funnily enough is 3 miles from Linlithgow, maybe that's where it got its name from! Then back through Beecraigs Country Park, the only really big climb of the day and down the descent into Torphicen! Then another descent into Bathgate where I joined the cycle path to Whitburn and on to Harthill, where I turned north towards Blackridge and west for home! I arrived home with a clean bike for a change as the roads were all dry after a decent spell of weather!

A little review of my year, starting with January with a total of 6 rides and 427 miles covered! A mild February saw me doing 611 miles from 8 rides, by far my best February total ever! Another 600 miler followed in March, 621 from 8 rides! 9 rides in April for a total of 675 miles, followed by a big May total of 741 miles from 9 rides! Only 8 rides in June but a very healthy total of 736 miles, July wasn't so productive though with just 593 miles from 8 rides!

Things improved in August with 640 miles from 9 rides and 631 miles from 8 rides in September! October only brought 7 rides with a decent total of 608 miles, then came a wet November with just 432 miles from 7 rides! December arrived and we had some very mild weather resulting in my best ever December total with 531 miles from 9 rides!

On to the records, my best yearly total of 7250 miles and my best ever elevation gain of 469,607 ft! I also beat last years total of 22 imperial centuries by 1 so a very productive year on the bike! A screenshot of my stats for the year! Only 96 rides but my best ever average yearly mileage of just over 75.5 miles!

On the cycling front it has been a truly incredible year, taking my bike past 43000 miles just blows my mind and if I can do another 7000 miles next year it would see 50000 miles appearing on my display which would be absolutely amazing to see! Nothing is guaranteed in life of course so I will just enjoy what I have achieved up until now!

I wish you all the very best for 2026!
Beautiful pictures there, you are going to need a bigger country to carry on 🤣.
Maybe all the backroads you havent covered, anyway Im not sure if the Scottish celebrate new year, but have a good one 😜

I’m a little sick to my stomach after reading about ferrets. I had a friend who had ferrets and he described what happened to a cat that tangled with one of them. 🤢

Maybe they keep the ferrets in their trousers to keep them away from pets and small children. Surely the responsible thing to do when carrying (a ferret) in public.

You should have a line of bike manufacturers who would sponsor you with a new bike. Giant should be first in line.

Scotland is more than big enough.. ;)

I'm sure they don't care about a 67 year old pensioner...😂
Fantastic Rab! Giant kudos to you.👍
Thank you, Bob!

Well, it’s almost time to start a 2026 thread. I hope to be riding again (soon) to participate.

Rab, you’re still my hero!

@Chargeride: I've just watched your "Pennine Bridleway" video, and I admit you had a hard ride together with Brian! Congratulations for completing it!

No idea why Brian's Garmin Instict watch produced such wrong results. Your iGPSport device is a true cycling computer (only without the maps), so no wonder it was accurate.

You might try Komoot anyway.

There are as many as 78 ready routes around Burnley UK. Meaning, someone had actually made the trip and defined a public route for other users.

Please try in on a computer:
  1. Sign in and log in to Komoot
  2. Click Routes in the top menu
  3. Enter the location such as Burnley in the top bar. Select Mountain Biking next to the search field. All available public MTB routes will be displayed (here, seven pages of choices)
  4. Select a route, such as "Pennine Bridleway Rocky Trail – Bodkin Lane loop from Worsthorne". If you like it, click Save
  5. Now, go to Saved in the top menu. Click Download next to your route name
    1767112249646.png
    then confirm by pressind Download.
If your GPS computer uses the GPX files, that's the one you need!

Happy New Year to you and to you all!

I use plotaroute mainly because it has an excellent route creating interface and I save the files as gpx on the computer and my phone for backup.

The route was 25m, 19 offroad, but I cut one loop off because it was a 2 mile loop with 800ft climb and would have left us empty

I was wondering why the comments are trailing off, 92% of my viewers are watching on a tv, only 8% on mobile and tablet, this is what youtube are pushing, they want to be a serious tv channel.

so stop promoting slop then !!!

My point was Komoot had excellent ready and proven trails that you could immediately use, and even easily change the starting point of the trip...
I also wonder what is worse with the Komoot route planning interface compared to plotaroute.

I was talking to St. Peter the other day, and he let me in on a little secret: You'll be judged harshly on your choice of cycling route planner at the Pearly Gates, so you better get it right.

Me: Wow, so which one gets you into Heaven? Komoot, RideWithGPS, plotaroute, Google Maps, a map-covered dart board?

St. Peter: You'll have to pray for that guidance yourself.

Me: Well, could you at least tell me if @Stefan Mikes is getting in?

St. Peter: Sorry, we can't discuss ongoing investigations.

Using a wrong route planner might get you to the Pearly Gates earlier than expected! :D

Meanwhile, near Warsaw Poland...

The Little Frog has announced any loyalty reward points should be used up this year. A little frenzy has accured! You could use your "żappkas" for hot drink, regular beer (I don't drink it), snacks, and several other defined products. Of course, I had to visit Żabka to use mine, too :)

Frost, snowing, and a 20 mph westerly wind were not particularly good for cycling :)

It is snowing all the time. It will be pretty interesting if I can visit the laundromat and buy Nescafe Gold (new) in the morning...
