2025 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

Thanks guys, I'm sure a massive company like Giant don't give a hoot about an old guy riding one of their bikes past 40000 miles...🤣
And, not to joke, but wow!!! Rab! That is amazing. Congrats on a splendid milestone! As you know, I’ve held you up as an example (and taken your hard-earned recommendations) to help me too. My tush thanks you, and my body does as well. Don’t read anything into that. :D :D

The big question… What about groupies????
Totally unrelated but I owe you a story :)

It was 2009, and I had my first own band. Half of the band members were from Upper Silesia, so it meant frequent car trips (320 km or 200 miles one way) for rehearsals and rare concerts. Once, I had my car parked at the property of the singer and had to carry instruments and amps to the house. Being 48, I was tired and discouraged. The whole idea seemed absurd. Then my Silesian bassist winked at me and said: "Stefan, what about groupies?" :D :D :D

We set off to do a ride to the Barton swingbridge, but it was only a ten mile loop so we decided to go back over my hillbilly bridge as well.
It was much easier with two and lets remote creepy feeling.

Starting at Irlam locks google maps showed a path next to the main road, it was hilariously overgrown, but we soldiered on to access a remote bridge

Surprisingly my friend was fully supportive of pushing through basically Dr Livingstone territory, discovering a lost pygmy tribe was possible at this point

We found the bridge only to be met by two teenage hipsters smoking weed, I gave them a thumbs up and got a well deserved look of whatever.

Further on was the free ferry crossing, its still on google maps with opening times, but the website hasn't been updated since 2022,
and its completely blocked off with importantly no ferry.

We took advantage of a long traffic light stop to de vegetate the bikes

The swing canal bridge at Barton, still in working order but just left to decay otherwise
bar8.jpg

The lock keepers house , the new British solution of galvanised fence it off rather than invest in rebuilding and celebrating this world one off.
It was surrounded by fly tipping and old mattresses.

The other side of the canal is nicer.

Thats the bridge in the middle, we laughed about what would happen if the sluices failed and the entire canal just emptied as the bridge swung, a huge waterfall dropping
into the ship canal and watching them trying to close it again...I 'd buy a ticket for that.

The only upgrade is the Elf and Safety fire escape.

Got chased by these two huge dogs with the owner shouting them back while they completely ignored him.
Its alright mayyte, they wouldn't hurt a fly as its chewing on my backside.
We gave him the look, yeah thats what they all say in court, they've never eaten a cyclist before m'lud.

Some old school ship filling device

This path led into a completely fenced off derelict sports centre, we had to hike a bike out.

Dan was starting to tire and getting grumpy, then he failed to notice this rise wasn't a smooth path, but large steps and hit it flat out, bounced and was catapulted into the field
on his back, luckily it knocked the kid back into him and he thought it was hilarious.
Great day out, superficial injuries, Dan needed new knees anyway.

Where’s Stefan the Specialized shill when you need him?
I'm all on Charge's service, only he doesn't need my help :)

Well out of warranty, but its had a new motor and battery, my friends are all on two motor warranties and single battery warranty.
My Vado SL has 11,490 miles (18,486 km) and 4 years, no single warranty repair required.
My MY 2017 Vado (Gen 1) had two warranty interventions since 1st November 2019:
  • Free upgrade to 2020 electronics (including deadly expensive Supernova lights)
  • Free rebuild on the "lifetime frameset warranty" 3 years post the purchase, 1 year post the warranty expiry, free upgrade from Vado 5.0 to 6.0.
  • The motor replaced once after 14,000 km and 3 years but that was the Gen 1 motor.
I thing @Chargeride your mates really abuse their Levos. You're not that type (could see the delicate shoes you rode your Levo in) :)

Found my long lost Polar OH1+ wristwatch-type heart rate monitor and connected it to my Wahoo. My Beta Blocker medication controls my heart rate, and that was confirmed on the ride at very low assistance (HR never exceeded 115 bpm). However, my resting HR is too high so I need to increase the dose of the drug (as my doctor told me).

The pump is on the correct (right) side now. I always carry my Vado from the other side, and the pump had been in conflict with my leg! Besides, the British and Irish could eventually understand that the word "right" (correct) is the same for the side of the road (as opposite from the left -- or wrong --
soid, innit) :D
