2024 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

A few pics from this morning's 22km ride:

Took the hub-drive on an undulating 24-mile coast ride this morning to simulate certain aspects of the Vado SL coming in the next few days — nearly all with motor off. More about the test here.

The ride took the Coast Highway and side streets from home in south Carlsbad to Del Mar and back. This bluff-top park in Del Mar was the turnaround.

Part way down this failing sea cliff is a locally infamous but supremely scenic stretch of passenger and freight rail doing a slow slide into the Pacific. The constant repairs warrant its own work yard.

Knowing the importance of in-ride nutrition from watching the 2024 Tour de France, I grabbed a kombucha and chipotle aoli dog at the Moonlight Beach concession stand on the way home.

Jacek tells me we should do a 1 Rab ride on Sunday :)
A little bit scared: Now, I have only got two Vado batteries left!
Hopefully, I will survive yet another "No-Man's Land" gravel ride!

Over 3,000 ft elevation gain, and over 100 miles if you count the train station rides...

Now thats California, not the excavator shot though.
I love showing people this picture, Im pretty sure its real.
Maybe this is why they are pretending to be so anti oil.

I rode here last year but chose the left track and Im glad I did, it was far more interesting, but I'll give this look.
This is where it starts

Its a private road, but with access via the bridle way, you can bet they've spent many a night with the
local council at the local expensive restaurant trying to get the bridleway discontinued.
The landscaping here is magical, the road just winds through beautiful gardens still being created.
hhh2.jpg

Looks like the entire farm has been converted into expensive apartments, immaculate.
hhh3.jpg

Finally reach the proper bit, steep ascent, right down into high, bottom gear and still pushing hard.
hhh5.jpg

Arrived at a ploughed field hilltop full of seagulls and cows, one of whom is either tired or dead.
hhh6.jpg

It seems the path goes through the back garden of this farm, I actually rode past the window as they were sat having lunch.
hhh7.jpg

I didn't see any cats
hhh8.jpg

Not even silly ones.
hhh9.jpg

After a brake pad scorching descent for over a mile I was back in the village, I love the fact old men are buying bikes enough to skew the styling to these
over the top retro beasts.

My sister lives near San Diego, we’ll have to bring the bike next time we go!

So my wife and I had some time so we loaded the bikes on the rack and made the 3 mile drive south to Pacific Grove in Monterey County, California.
Our first ride was the 17 Mile Drive from Pacific Grove to Pebble Beach. Just the coastal section, there and back.

It’s $12 by car to get in, bikes are free. We did this years ago in a car but the bikes made it a completely different experience.

One of the first things we passed was the John Denver memorial. His small plane crashed right here, off shore.
IMG_1882.jpeg

It’s a very scenic stretch of coastline with many turnouts to stop and view natural attractions.

Seals jumping and playing. ^^^

All that water and none to drink. These squirrels were thirsty!
IMG_1912.jpeg

The coast is dotted with mansions like these. Some big names live here, like Clint Eastwood, George Lopez, Condoleeza Rice, and the ceo of General Motors just to name a few. I don’t know where exactly, but somewhere around here.

This house is called fairy tale style. I call it toontown. Nearby Carmel-By-The-Sea has a whole neighborhood full of these but this was a one-off along the coast.

IMG_1960.jpeg

There are several golf courses along the way, including the famous Pebble Beach.

The mirror never lies…it was a gorgeous day in Pebble Beach!

Although we didn’t pack on a lot of miles, we took our time and had a great day. Here, we are enjoying a west coast golden hour.
IMG_1888.jpeg

…. And beyond. This was the night of the blue moon. It wasn’t blue but it was big and bright on the Monterey Bay.

Part 2, our second ride, coming when I get around to it 😆.

Great photos! Would love to explore the 17 Mile Drive by bike some day.

Got married at the Lone Cypress 40+ yrs ago with a reception in Carmel. Lived in the Bay Area then but spent many weekends in the Monterey-Carmel-Point Lobos area. Gorgeous!

Wow, that’s cool. 😎 You really get around!

Unfortunately, the quaint little Carmel we knew from those days has been taken over by Silicon Valley money. Downtown shops and restaurants are totally unaffordable and uninteresting now, and the streets are clogged with Bentleys, Lamborghinis and Mercedes GTs.

Way beyond even La Jolla!

A least Casanova — one of our favorite Italian restaurants anywhere — is still there.
