2019 Turbo Vado and Garmin Edge 1030 Data Problem

HI All,

I have been using the Garmin Edge 1030 with my TV 4.0 since I got it and one of the most useful fields on the Garmin is Travel Range. It takes into account the battery charge and speed setting and gives a fairly accurate estimate of the range remaining. Well my bike just came back from it's second warranty motor change and they also updated all the software on the bike. When I first turned on the Garmin it didn't recognize the bike so I had to re-pair the new motor with the Garmin as a new sensor. Everything is working fine BUT there is an arbitrary distance (.62 miles if it matters) in the Travel Range field. I've gone through all the fixes on the Garmin and I agree with their tech support that since the Travel Range field goes blank when the bike is turned off that the problem is probably bad data from the bike. Any ideas or suggestions?

I'm looking at this in computer-terms and it seems like if there were some way to "clear the cache" or turn this particular channel off then on that it might clear this bad data. Could be all wrong though. . .

Vado (all models including MY2021) does not calculate the Range. The figure of 0.62 mi is exactly equal to 1 km. (Giant e-bikes with RideControl One remote do calculate the Travel Range). So, no need to worry. It is a feature not a bug.

2022 Vado, Como, and Tero with MasterMind display do calculate the range but I could not test the connectivity of any of these new e-bikes with a bike computer via ANT+.

I don't think Garmin can calculate the range. Whatever has caused the change, a constant of 1 km is displayed on my Wahoo Roam, too.

Believe me, the Garmin could give a fairly accurate range remaining estimate. Interesting that you have the same issue on the Roam?

Is this a case where you need to use the fake channel to get the battery data to the Garmin? The default channel setting is probably off in Mission Control.

I thought that as well but going through all three of the fake channels has no effect.

If two very different ANT+ bike computers produce the same value, the matter is related to Specialized e-bikes. My brother riding a Giant Trance E+ gets the same Travel Range values on his Garmin Edge 530 as he was getting on his Giant RideControl EVO display before that display got damaged (and these Range values are as bad as the Giant e-bike prediction).

LEV Travel Range is a data field and not something that either Garmin or Wahoo could calculate. The value must be transferred from the e-bike, same as LEV Battery %, or LEV Travel Mode. I believe you could be getting Travel Range in the past, and you cannot get that value anymore. There is no single place in TCD-w display or Mission Control to show the Range; therefore I believe that parameter is not available for our bike computers either..

Thanks Stefan. So do you think that is a software issue on the bike or some sort of hardware issue connected to the motor replacement? Honestly, this would be so much easier to figure out if Specialized made it easier to get technical information on their bikes!

I think Specialized disabled the feature, either on purpose or by mistake. I'd really like to test one of the new Specialized MasterMind e-bikes for their ANT+ connectivity, as the new e-bikes indeed do the Range calculation.

Answer from Specialized: Previous compatibility was accidental and probably was removed in a software update.

I like the Turbo Vado but I am so sorry I bought a Specialized. Nothing is ever easy with them. :-(

Buy a Bosch e-Bike. No ANT+ whatsoever.
Giant e-bikes are acceptable. Their e-bike app is not.
Not sure about Shimano.

@Shekky How are you connecting your Garmin to your bike that you have a Travel Range field available? My Garmin just sees it as a power meter and speed/cadence sensor. I also have an IQconnect app that can display the assist mode and battery level. Is there another way to connect?

My brother who owns a Garmin Edge 530 and a Giant Trance E+ has shown to me there are two options of connecting a compatible e-bike, and both methods work at the same time. You can connect Speed/Cadence/Power meters but also connect the e-bike as the whole thing. With the second way of connecting, you are getting LEV (Light Electric Vehicle) data fields on your Garmin:

Add a Sensor
-- Speed/Cadence
-- E-bike (here is the name of the e-bike given by my brother)
-- Power
P.S. My brother has renamed all the items above, as otherwise only numbers are displayed as item names.

It should work on any ANT+ compatible e-bike.
