A relevant song!

Did early British punk-rock affect you in any way, Chris? For me, Sham 69 were one of I think six or maybe fifteen British bands to inspire me most.

Yes this charger is for both batteries, good luck with your issue!

Managed to break away from a family reunion in Pacific Grove, CA yesterday for a spectacular 20 mi coast ride on rented ebikes with cousin-in-law and friend JB.

20261016_112735.jpg

He picked the gray 500W Aventon Level, maybe a Level.3. And for some reason, I felt attracted to the yellow 350W Aventon Soltera.2. The 46 lb Soltera's sold as a lightweight commuter but has potential as an affordable flat-bar gravel bike with the right tires.

Both bikes were torque-sensing Class 2 hub-drives — a genre Aventon appears to do well. As with my neighbor's Level.2, the Soltera's pedal assist and throttle were both very nicely implemented.

As for the ride, this stretch of the central California coast between Monterey Bay and Big Sur is famous for its stunning rocky coastline and pocket beaches. Included from north to south are Monterey, Pacific Grove (blue dot), Pebble Beach, Carmel, Carmel Meadows, and Point Lobos.

Like the coast of Maine and the north and east shores of Lake Tahoe, it's a poster child for the scenic magic that happens when granite and water meet.

First we headed north on Sunset Avenue in Pacific Grove. Sunset hugs Asolimar State Beach — exquisite granite coastline the whole way.

More Asilomar State Beach photos taken days later here.

Sunset Drive took us north to a turnaround at Lovers Point, just past Kissing Rock. Pacific Grove may be Monterey's less glamorous neighbor, but less amorous it's not.
;^}

20261016_112813.jpg

Near the tip of the Monterey Peninsula, Lovers Point stands at the south end of Monterey Bay. The Santa Cruz Mountains in the distance here mark the north end.

20261016_112623.jpg

Grabbed a coffee and pastry there before backtracking to the famous 17 Mile Drive through Pebble Beach.

20261016_123237(0).jpg

The southbound (ocean) side of the 17 Mile Drive was all granite outcrops with pocket beaches in between. The other side was all mansions and immaculately groomed golf courses.

At one point, we passed a procession of 10+ Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and the like presumably shuttling between the links and home. Rough life.

Our southern turnaround was Cypress Point. The oft-photographed Lone Cypress there happens to be where the missus and I tied the knot 42 years ago. Took lots of photos for her.

Fantastic location to get hitched! Congrats to you both!

The Heights 2 Group Ride
Many pictures, a longer story!

Five of us arrived in Łódź Fabryczna at 9:33 on cold and misty Saturday. The weather turned to beautiful soon! There was a little conflict of interest: Marek is a sports person and he loves fast rides with minimum stops. I had to explain him the sight-seeing aspect of the ride, and he complied.

Radar Hill. During the times long gone, the hill sported military radars, and the access was restricted. Nowadays, it is a telecom and the access is allowed. However, picture this: as we were skylarking, a woman (certainly a Tamara) :) must have picked up an ancient phone receiver and we heard her terrifying thundering voice through ancient loudspeakers: "PLEASE IMMEDIATELY VACATE THE GATE AREA! REPEAT, IMMEDIATELY VACATE THE GATE AREA!". So we escaped the hill :)

The intersection of Barley and Grain, Vodka :D

"A tree in the middle of the road, Vodka" :)

Not sure what kind of plant had those violet flowers but I had to stop for a photo!

Entering a singletrack.

1792314008135.png

One of rare pictures in which you can actually feel how steep the descent was!

1792314066047.png

The city of Łódź was only created in 19th century for the textile industry. The whole land around it could develop thanks to the rapidly expanding railroad system. We could meet railroads more often than not! Here: One of tunnels below the railroad.

1792314207087.png

The route I had created was very diversified regarding the terrain type, hence, interesting.

1792314329146.png

The first of many villages with funny geographical references. For instance Wołyń (Volhynia) - a historical region of Poland, now in Ukraine.

1792314462954.png

Why Palestine?!

1792314491526.png

Like, in Ukraine :D

1792314517627.png

I trusted Komoot users I could see something from the Snail Hill but I could only determine we were indeed in the Heights.

1792314597987.png

Krzysiek, a senior road cyclist, only rides vintage bikes he had restored himself. This bike was pretty modern as for him: a 26" wheel folder with mechanical disk brakes. As we were descending the Snail Hill at high speed and on the rocks, his front wheel got a snake-bite. I offered staying with Krzysiek (he does not use any form of navigation so needs a navigator). Krzysiek could repair the wheel in
eleven minutes of which he spent 6 minutes to extract a stuck wrench from the frame storage!

1792315032341.png

MEANWHILE, the three other guys blindly followed my route (which had some obvious errors). They walked their bikes for half a kilometre through
premium grass :D

As I and Krzysiek reached that spot, my mate whispered to me "Let's return and find a detour..." My GET-THERE-ITIS (reach the destination at any cost) fortunately capitulated. We returned, found an asphalt detour and rode for only 5 km more but conveniently!

1792315309221.png

I believe there is only one Goddess, and it is my @Brix :)

1792315375660.png

As we reached Moscow... :)

1792315406946.png

...our three mates were zooming the Ultra Hyper Premium Gravel I had promised to them :)

1792315484083.png

1792315558037.png

As agreed with our sporty buddies earlier, we took a shortcut to Grzmiąca, to see the murals there.

1792315580039.png

Having met the main group at Dino supermarket, we continued riding together. Here: Siberia :D

I made a big mistake to take my Vado SL for the ride (it should be the powerful Vado 6.0). I also mismanaged the main battery/Range Extenders procedure. My Vado SL was slower and slower in the demanding terrain... I could only apply the proper battery management in Lipce Reymontowskie as we stopped for lunch at "Boryna Inn". Named after the two heroes of "The Peasants", Boryna father and his son, that simple restaurant offered big portions of simple but tasty countryside food!

W.S. Reymont and his "The Peasants"
The author worked as a railroad linesman in the village of Lipce. He was a keen observer of the life and it made him write "The Peasants" novel, first published in a big newspaper as a series between 1902 and 1908. Full of passion (like the love of both father and his son to the same lass) , the novel brought the author not only money and freedom but also the 1924 Nobel Prize.

1792316111216.png

It is where Reymont lived as a linesman in Lipce. Now, it is Lipce Reymontowskie to refer it was where his novel action was set.

1792316993728.png

We agreed my buddies would sprint to Skierniewice to catch the fast return train while I rode solo at my own speed. Here, Napoleon's Way, a sandy road where Bonaparte's soldiers were once marching. I sympathise with them, I really do! :) As I reached the train station in the city, I met Krzysiek, and we both took a slower but more practical train home.

1792317171635.png

Just recently, at least two totally different versions of Bolesław Prus "The Doll" novel were filmed (Netflix -- not good or true at all! -- and the movie theater -- good!). Let me tell you what "The Doll" is about.

Stanisław Wokulski is an early Polish capitalist who made his big money on deliveries to the Russian Army during the Crimean War. He is in love with Miss Izabela Łęcka, a member of pauperised aristocracy. Wokulski tries to buy himself into the upper class and win Izabela's love. Despite the terrible financial situation of aristocracy, the upstart would never be admitted there. While on the platform of the Skierniewice train station (this train station!) Wokulski ovehears Izabela and her friend talking in English -- both wouldn't think an upstart could even learn English as French was the language of upper classes and English was a new thing then. Wokulski thus finds out Izabela is unfaithful to him. As the train is about to depart, Wokulski tells Izabela in English: "Farewell, Miss Izabela, farewell!" so she knows she's been exposed. Then he intends to throw himself under a train nearby but is saved by a linesman. His further fate is unknown. So Mr. Wokulski has his monument at the Skierniewice station platform now :)

I'm hopeless. Even could not make a Metric Century on the main ride! (Well the elevation gain was decent).

I've just noticed your reply.

X-Ray Spex*, Generation X**, Siouxsie & The Banshees*** belong to my top choice! I'm aware of all other names you mentioned (The Undertones being a Derry band, innit).
---------
*) "Oh Bondage Up Yours!" (Some people say little girls should be seen but not heard...)
**) "One Hundred Punks", "Kleenex" :)
***) "Nicotine Stain" (It's just a habit when I reach to my pocket for the last cigarette when the day breaks...)

British punk-rock songs gave me the greatest boost during my formative years of learning English with the honourable mention to The Stranglers. This grammar: "I guess I shouldn't have strangled her to death...", " She had laced my coffee with acid. Normally, I wouldn't have minded..." Sham 69 taught me how to pronounce "Ulster", etc.

The Sunset Drive segment of the central California coast ride I reported yesterday hugged Asilomar State Beach. We've also been walking the dog there at least daily on the fabulous Asilomar Trail between the road and the water.

Today's dog walk treated us to something we'd never seen before:

Deer on the beach! By the time I got my camera up, the buck accompanying the doe and fawn had gone behind a rock.

Started driving to the Lake District, but there was a crash ahead and we diverted to Blackpool.
