Picked up my bike from the shop in record heat today (see below) but decided to ride farther from home to check out the post-Marie wave damage at Cardiff State Beach. It was worse than I thought — much worse.

Outdoor temperature at home at 10 am this morning, only 0.6 mi from the ocean. Totally unheard of!
Oh well, imagine how much worse it'd be if we had global warming.

Before: This beach got a thick sand cover in a major replenishment of Del Mar, Solana Beach, and south Encinitas beaches ~1.5 years ago. Millions of $$$ and zillions of gallons of diesel fuel expended for the dredging, pumping, redistribution, and final grooming.

After: Now it's all gone. Only the underlying cobble remains, and some of that may be gone, too. Don't even wanna think about what Del Mar must look like now, but I'll ride down there when this heat wave ends next week.

Just before high tide. Normally all you'd see here at this tide is sand. Now there's none. For the foreseeable future, beachgoers who'd normally park their chairs on the sand will have to content themselves with sitting near or on the edge of the sidewalk instead.

With no sand buffer to dissipate the wave energy, I'm worrying now about this natural rock formation the locals call Cardiff Reef.
Waves previously got to this part of it only at king tides.

Cardiff State Beach and the Del Mar Dog Bearch are the only 2 places in North County where dogs are allowed on the sand. Roxie and I have spent countless joyful hours on both. Really hurts my heart to see Cardiff in its current sad state.

Worse yet, my knees can't handle walking any distance on cobble, and Roxie doesn't like walking on it, either. So without sand, Cardiff beach is now effectively unwalkable for both of us — indefinitely. The stuff's also totally unrideable without fat tires.
Praying there's still some sand at Del Mar.
