I got out, too, although our abundant ice/snow cover was melting prodigiously into boggy mud, mostly on our gravel roads where one just had to be extra careful to remain in the center crown of the road and not venture too close to the deep tire-gripping-speed-slacking muddy shoulders of the roads where one could quickly come to a mired halt even from racing speed.

I managed 8 lovely peaceful miles on our gravel roads in the unexpectedly warm midday, and narrowly escaped being mired in shoulder mud only once. It was the first time any of my bikes had seen the outside of my barn's heated tack room since winter began. It was nice being in the saddle again.

Not an e-Bike ride today. Pushing the fatbike up very rough, step singletrack (rocks and pea gravel, which sees one sliding backwards more than going forward) in temps of 41 °C (according to the Wahoo Ace) is bad enough without trying it on the R&M Supercharger.

A few shots of the more pleasant sections of the Canning Contour Channel. We had to abort in the end as we had to resort to bushbashing on bikes due to the track being so overgrown and blocked by falls, etc. Anyway, we will be back to at least follow the channel by roads and better quality bush tracks.

Started a freezing ride to the rough end of Liverpool.
BALT1.jpg

This described the day perfectly
BALT2.jpg

This used to be covered in Black lives Matter graffiti ,quite poetic from the port that ran the slayve trade.
BALT3.jpg

The trendy place to be these days
BALT4.jpg

Constantly under reconstruction, but absolutely banging at the weekend, the trouble they went to building a brewery
BALT5.jpg

Compare to modern construction, just beyond dreary.
BALT6.jpg

All this area was flattened in the war.
BALT7.jpg

Now I'm in Toxteth ,immigrant central, this beautiful chapel in the middle of one of the most famous british race riot areas.
BALT8.jpg

Very poor areas with random decadence plonked in every few hundred yards
BALT9.jpg

This is Liverpools sprawling millionaires sector, the money long gone and everything converted to flats.
BALT10.jpg

It is beginning to re gentrify, but theres a long way to go.
BALT11.jpg

Just street after street of decaying grandeur, filled with students and hippies 😂
BALT12.jpg

Of course it depends on your viewpoint, the original residents probably made their wad from the slave trade, but Liverpool is a poster boy for what happens when
the money moves away, they were built to last and that has kept them like monoliths to the sands of time.
BALT13.jpg

At the end of this row, the yard is full of car parts and the rear gardens completely overgrown.
It suddenly monsooned on me, but I'll be back tomorrow to take in more of it,

A Frosty META Bar Ride

I wasn't feeling for a ride last weekend (frost!) but why are friends for? Tommy reminded me I needed keep my legs moving (and was ready to -- virtually -- kick my ass if I wouldn't ride) :)

1771252291445.png

A Fast City Train saved me the absolutely unnecessary part of my ride (still, I had to pedal for 4.2 km to the train station).

As I arrived in the Warsaw-City station, I rode south. I'm always forgetting the ride from the City Centre to Powsin is 15 km, that is, the half of the city! There was some issue: the farther I was getting from the City Centre the worse the state of bike paths was! Eventually, any bike paths became unrideable because they all were covered by uneven/rutty thick layer of ice! (So I had to ride with traffic). As I reached my favourite META Bar (Finish Line) the merry and very nice owner recognised me as a regular patron and instantly offered a hot beverage.

1771252770935.png

My choice was hot Kvass, a non-alcoholic beverage made of fermented black bread and very popular among our east neighbours (that one was brewed in Latvia). I'd also argue META bakes the best pizza in Warsaw!

While I was familiar with the owner, the rest of the personnel was new to me. As I approached the counter to pay for the lunch, the waiter asked me a question I couldn't understand. Seeing my blank stare, he repeated the word. 'I can't understand you?' -- I uttered -- 'Would you like to pay, sir?' Believe me or not, the guy had asked me 'Bezahlen?' twice. What did he think? That I was a German?! :D Necessary to mention the waiter was Polish! :D :D :D

I had a mental issue about the return trip. It would be the safest to go back via the city but that would be a very long trip... Given I was riding studded tyres, I thought the return through Kabacki Forest might be doable... I quickly planned the route with a new Polish app by the name of Veloplanner: It was as good as Komoot Premium but totally free! I fed my Wahoo ACE with the data and set off for the return ride.

Kabacki Forest meant hardpacked snow covered with ice. Well my Marathon Winter Plus studded tyres performed nicely! I only rode pretty slowly and was very careful of the control of my Vado. The ride through the Forest was intentionally short and lead to a location of Kierszek. "All routes lead to damned Kierszek!" is my favourite saying when I'm there. It is very easy to make a navigational error and land in Kierszek :) Also, riding south from the Forest will inevitably take you to Kierszek :D :D :D This time, it was an intentional choice as I wanted trying a new return way through Zgorzała and Zamienie.

It was 51 km for the day. The average temperature was -6 C.

After 6 days of truly awful weather it was good to get back in the saddle today, we did have an ice warning until 10am so I waited until after 11 to be safe! The afternoon temp was 5C but light rain was due around 3pm and sleet/heavy rain was due to arrive around 4pm! Amazingly they got the forecast right for once so I was glad I finished my ride at 3.30pm, about 20 minutes after I got home the heavens opened! The wind was from the SW and around 20-25mph so I headed NE to enjoy a nice tailwind, thanks to the sun it didn't feel too cold!

I grabbed a few photos on the road from Longriggend to Slamannan, the Campsie and Ochil Hills had a nice dusting of snow!

1771266073069.jpeg

The Campsies!

1771266097612.jpeg

At Slamannan I took the back road towards Avonbridge, lots of climbing before this awesome descent and I hit just over 40mph with the tailwind helping!

1771266160718.jpeg

After the descent I turned north towards Shieldhill, I had a big climb here after this short descent!

1771266267394.jpeg

1771266281172.jpeg

The Ochil Hills were looking amazing today, I'm hoping they will fix this patchwork road one day...

1771266383195.jpeg

1771266440324.jpeg

The mountains to the north of the Campsies were fully covered in snow!

1771266533026.jpeg

The descent down into Glen Village beckoned, almost 42mph down this one at the steepest part!

1771266601951.jpeg

1771266628165.jpeg

1771266641078.jpeg

I then made my way to Linlithgow which was all downhill and lots of fun and then started up the big climb to Beecraigs Country Park!

1771266745066.jpeg

I stopped on the way up for a few photos!

1771266787461.jpeg

1771266802952.jpeg

1771266814404.jpeg

Now I had the amazing descent down into the valley to look forward to, the climb in the distance was awaiting me!

1771266940942.jpeg

More stunning views of the Ochils on the way down!

1771266998524.jpeg

1771267011498.jpeg

I had a nice clear view of the bridges over the Forth also!

1771267071832.jpeg

After tackling the climb out of the valley I stopped for a break and a snack and grabbed some photos looking back down the valley!

1771267154765.jpeg

1771267169915.jpeg

1771267181657.jpeg

1771267193847.jpeg

I then turned south towards Dechmont on the rollercoaster Burnhouse Road, the Pentland Hills were also white with snow!

1771267298448.jpeg

I enjoyed the descent down into Dechmont where it was time to turn directly into the headwind after 32 miles! I joined the cycle path to Whitburn here and then took the cycle path up to Armadale! Then it was the back road to Blackridge where I turned for home battling the headwind all the way, 5 miles from home I got my first rain shower! It was short lived thankfully but it was enough to make things uncomfortable! I had another couple of light showers before arriving home at 3.30pm! What a great ride that was and the amazing views were a real bonus, I'm hoping to get out again tomorrow afternoon with another ice warning in place from 6pm tonight until 10am tomorrow!

It was good to see you posting again Flora @Readytoride you have been missed!
