Sadly I'm listening to music less these days while riding. The epidemic of fast ebikes on the paths just make it too sketchy anymore. At any time I might get passed, closely, by some moron on a motorcycle masquerading as something 'legal' at 40 - 50 MPH on a bike path. And it gets worse every day. They've forced me to constantly monitor my 6 - who wants to do that?
I'm riding less too. These people are ruining cycling for me.

Get a radar taillight. My Garmin set will identify bikes.

Yeah, that may be the solution. Sucks that I have to spend so much money to offset the googans, but that's where we are now

Now, if the Garmin could also vaporize them painlessly before they reach you, that might be worth the money.

Probably a few feet... I don't play it too loud but it's enough to know there is someone behind them (and if they still can't hear, I ring the bell).
I found an app that mixes my playlists from song to song like a DJ so I feel like I'm at the club.

If you're listening to club music, you might be able to pedal in sync with at least some of it. Do you ever find yourself doing that?

I don't understand why people who play music in public think that everyone likes their particular selections. Most people have their own personal taste in music.
I guess the good part is, riders playing a loud boom box don't need to announce their presence by ringing a bell.

That's one homeless guy I'd like to meet! I love me some noisy metal, the crazier the better! I don't listen to anything that's distracting on 2 wheels. Its far to dangerous on the roads and I need to be fully aware of my surroundings. All my motorcycle helmets have integrated audio and the first thing I do is pull it out. Oh, and when I'm riding I'm not answering the phone either unless someone knows the "code" to get me to answer. I ride to get away from all the noise. My car has a nice sound system in it though.
Oh, and I have a weak spot for Mariachi music as well! Fun side fact for my music. I used to run McIntosh from the 60's and this is what I end up doing. I'll set the highs very harsh, the mid's crunchy/distorted and the lows on the muddy side.
We have a guy at work that rides a bicycle and he has a bluetooth water bottle and he plays mostly 70's classic rock. Not super loud but we play Name That Tune when he passes by. Luckily I know a bunch of deep cuts from my older sister. And to think I hated Steely Dan growing up, now I have all the albums on CD.

The music I am playing (according to Apple and AI) is called Techno Funk and Freestyle which is heavy in the Roland 808 drum beats. So very pedalable.
They can only hear as I ride by them... it's not super boombox loud. And sometimes you need to hear something else to determine if you like it.
Yes... that's mostly what it's for... but many times joggers/walkers are wearing headphone so I need to bell them too.

I ride trails to enjoy nature. Any noise, including music, detracts from that experience. Each to his own though.

Sorry, I'm with @6zfshdb on this: I really don't want other peoples' music mucking up my soundscape. And I don't want or need their help in finding new music.
Tried some Techo Funk and Freestyle this morning, and it's no more my cup of tea than my music would likely be yours.
The win-win is dead simple: We all keep our music to ourselves in public. If it's really about enjoying the music and not about posing, that shouldn't be a problem.

My relationship with music has vastly changed over the last ten years.
Never listen to it in the house, car or bike except in very specific scenarios.
This ties in with my complete collapse of interest in watching a movie, I havent watched a full movie or tv show for a decade, I watch movies via clips, usually compiled with added music or the original, a movie to me now is a 20 minute youtube video someone has made of them building something or embarking on an adventure.
The thought of going to see a movie at a cinema is beyond me.
I dont watch sport or have the slightest interest in whos winning what.
I feel the younger me was someone else.
I think this is slowly becoming the norm.
