Lady cyclist killed in Davis involving juvenile on ebike...on the bike path.

You want the security patches to avoid becoming part of a hacker's bot farm or having spyware and key loggers installed on your computer. New vulnerabilities are found every day.

So they say. But I don't hit sketchy websites or open sketchy emails, and so far have not had any problem. Some of my friends who update their browsers regularly have had their identities stolen many times. It's hard for me to wrap my head around. What is it that people are doing online that causes the issues? My guess is that it's mostly phishing, but I dunno.

I did have my credit/debit card get skimmed once at a gas station, but that was easily remedied. The bogus charges didn't go through, my card was disabled, sent a new one in a couple of days.

I don't use Venmo or Apple Pay or any of that crap either. I'm a health care provider, it's not safe for my business.

I put the laser in a frame-pump mount then shot it at a water bottle at my office. What is great is that if you accidently did shot it at your hand the hole would self-cauterize.

That's your choice. I am a computer network engineer, unpatched computers are not safe for my business. I don't click on sketchy links either, but exploits don't always rely on clicks.

I don't like the new law and I think it will be amended before 2027. However, if it comes to a choice between sharing my age with applications running on my computer or not patching vulnerabilities, I will put in my age. I suppose you could always do like my wife and lie about your age. But even she has stopped doing that now that we are in our sixties. The intent of the law seems to be to prevent kids from downloading and running games with sexual content.

I remember when I was seven years old and found out that my mom was 29 and I cried because my mom was as old as dirt, and would probably be dead by morning?

Turned out that had already been 29 years old for half a decade. 😁

The first copilot vulnerability was a genuine looking url that could make the AI pass on all your info to a hacker without you even knowing anything had happened, it would literally read your entire PC and send the lot.

'The intent of the law seems to be to prevent kids from downloading and running games with sexual content.'

Ha, yes of course. 😎

When @RunForTheHills says "hacker bot farm", the hacked computer owner or operator does not have to take any action to enable the breach other than turn the computer on and connect to the Internet. One breach is when your obsolete, insecure BIOS and network driver are taken over by the bot, and your computer becomes part of a spam network. It gets right through your firewall. You won't even notice it. Your computer may seem to be running slowly, and your network devices may be passing an unusually high amount of traffic.

At 91 something else could have taken him out. It is actuarial table odds. He lived for three months after the blind surprise collision. Sometimes riding on the street is dangerous, particularly on bin day. My aunt was in her 80's with Parkinson's, using her walker in a park when she collided with an analog bicycle. She later died. With Parkinson's she may have made an erratic move. A guy four blocks away was walking on the sidewalk when he was lightly bumped by a car accidently. The driver was looking left for oncoming traffic and he walked in front of her car from the right blindside. He fell on his butt then back whacked his head on the tarmac and died. There was no public outrage against cars.

People keep saying that. But except for going downhill most normal people can't move a normal bike at 20+ MPH very far at all. Unless you are really strong cyclist riding a fast bike you just can't sustain those speeds for any significant distance.
I ride at about 12-15 most of the time, but can go over 20 if needed. Just like a car could go over 55.

I guess that makes me Abby Normal.

Let's not get too hung up on absolute speeds. Plenty of public infrastructure around here where even 10 mph is too fast for conditions — the conditions including most importantly the presence of oblivious motorists, cyclists, pedestrians, kids, and dogs.

You can't go by how these other users ought to behave. You have to temper your speed on how they do behave.
