Winter Riding Gloves

One problem with commuting and traveling in the winter is I can't see my watch easily. So a few years ago I got a cheap B-Uhr inspired quartz watch and strapped it to my winter gloves. The gloves are nothing special, just ski gloves with a high viz accent. One of my routes takes me though the park at night and I like some extra light with a flashlight to look off to the sides for bears (not likely) or skunks (more likely). So I was experimenting with different flashlights on the right hand. Anyone do something similar?

You see Newts, I have no need to look at my wristwatch during the cold season as the time of day is displayed on my Wahoo ACE, and it is also available on the primary display of my Vado 6.0.

I own a nice collection of the cold season gloves. I think these brands are only popular in Europe:

• Warm CHIBA cycling gloves
• SHIMA motorcycle gloves
• Very warm CHIBA cycling gloves
• "Arctic" turtle CHIBA cycling gloves
• Skiing gloves for serious frost.

The issue with some of these gloves is the conductive strips on most of them have already worn out, making the touchscreen operation almost infeasible. Fortunately enough, all the devices I use are button operated (that was the principal reason to go Wahoo several years ago even if the latest Wahoo computers have optional touchscreens - except Bolt 3).

I hate that I have found no gloves that work below 40, but electric gloves for me.

I still have some cold weather riding gloves from my motorcycling days. Anything that’ll keep you warm at 5C on an unfair end motorcycle doing 85kph will keep you more than toasty on the bicycle at a few degrees below zero.

For light, I have a helmet that has light mounts on the top. The lights are crazy bright but are fully adjustable for brightness. Lumos Firefly lights for a WaveCel helmet.

I like the glove innovation with the watch and the flashlight. I strap a old Casio on my handlebars. Etsy sells a nice little adapter to make watches fit the bars of a bicycle or motorcycle.

I've gotten them wet a few times. If it's really cold and they get wet your hands will be warm but soggy, so the gloves are not waterproof at all. That's my main complaint about them.

I use cheap-o hunting gloves with the motor scooter. I carry a extra pair under the seat, so if one pair gets wet I just swap out to the dry pair. Motor scooter has a huge windshield and hand gaurds, so gloves do okay in the rain. I've never liked those Bar Muffs and refuse to use them. Something about putting my hands into the tubes messes with my goofy brain.

Interesting ideas and discussion. I would like to mount a light to the helmet, I just haven't taken the time to get some kind of mount yet. The extra light need is rare and not needed for the daily commute. I have the built in light on the Gazelle which is adequate and another Cygolite on the handlebar which I mostly use in blink mode for visibility, even at night.

There are so many battery things just on the bike I never wanted to add electric heat. There's the main drive battery that I charge every day to about 80%. I have a 10 mile round trip commute mostly in Turbo mode and use a little over 50% capacity. The extra front/rear lights mostly for blink I charge every week or two. And I also have a dual camera "dash cam" that is powered from a Ryobi tool battery that I swap out every 4 or 5 days.

Generally the parts I would heat are not the parts that get cold. The ski gloves are fine and I have enough layers to keep warm. I use Rainlegs like chaps for the wind on my legs. The cold part is my ears and face. I have the winter kit for the Bern helmet and it helps the ears some. Much below freezing I use a fleece "head sock" like a balaclava but often it is too warm.

So far the glove light is OK. I have been using it for the commute with red blink mode for the side light (Using a loopgear SK05 with flood and fill emitters on the front and RGB side lighting).

I use a small LED helmet light to better see handlebar mounted controls & accessories. It would also work well for reading a wrist watch.

Just 3600 lumen.

Very nice light with the big battery. Long runtime and good field of view. Combined with a 2000 Lumens set on the handlebar good enough for fast singletracks on the mtb in the dark.
