We had them in the past on a few models. Boost levers we called them, so you would have 10 or 15 seconds max support to either overtake another rider on a hill, use it for hillstarts of fly off at the trafic lights. Current top 3 systems in the EU do not support those.

The Amflow MTB has a boost mode, from 750 to 1000 watts for up to 30 seconds. This is a current model.

I know, this type of lever works a bit different, it takes over the torque sensor input so you actually have a "throttle" for a few seconds

I believe it's crazier on the West Coast, where the kids can ride all year long and perfect their wheelie skills. Here in Illinois, only the adults are riding now that we have wind chill down in the 40's. My main reference point is my local bike path. The kids used it when school was out, but now they're gone. They also raised the age limit to 16 years on most of the places, but no limits in my town yet. Personally, I'd rather not see age requirements.

West coaster here. I'd never actually seen a kid doing the whole wheelie thing on a Surron-like vehicle until about 2 weeks ago. I do see Lime Bikes/scooters being abused and driven recklessly fairly often.

Most of the time when I've seen those vehicles they are just someone going somewhere, maybe faster than they should and not riding where they are allowed, but still just someone going from point A to point B.

The last time I saw young adults doing wheelies was when we were in Chicago a couple years ago. About a half dozen motorbikes right down Michigan Avenue, throwing sparks and everything.

A grandmother complained to me today. Her grandson got busted for being in a bike lane by the cops on his illegal motorcycle with vestigial pedals. She said why did they sell it to me. I will yank the throttle and limit the speed to 20 then get another shop to verify that. Maybe I can also limit the amps to like 10 so it makes 750 W or less. She can take that report to the judge. The cop said that he needed a DOT motorcycle helmet, a motorcycle licence, to be over 16, have a licence plate, and motorcycle insurance. He is 14. It is a new motorcycle and cost the family $5,000.

Sounds like a clueless grandmother who needs to know what the heck she is buying her grandkids. These are not toys. Kids can be killed.

The divorced mother and father were in on it too. I will take it down to around 600 watts after removing the throttle and limiting the speed. I will also have the kid and dad take the CHP eBike training and certification class. That certification of safety training with the laws and the report of how the bike is legally Class 1 tuned with go in a ziplock under the seat at all times. It sounds by the grandmother's decryption to be a 2.5 kilowatt motorcycle now. She told of a battery the size of two gallons. I will talk to the kid today. The dad and mom and kid will need to sign an affidavit that Class 1 tuning will not be altered until he is 16 and it can become a legal Class 2. That all needs to be submitted to the Judge.
What I wonder is did the shop sell it as a legal Class 2 and then wink-nod tell how to unlock it from YouTube. Or did they just sell it as an off-road only motorcycle. I am glad that there is a crack down.

Out here on the Cape, a woman had her eye impaled by a passing e-biker, and is now pushing for stricter e-bike legislation in Massachusetts.

The CBS News article.

"She wants everyone to hear what happened to her and she wants e-bikes off all trails. "I said it the first day I woke up, I said, 'That's going to be my mission,'" she said."
How on earth did that happen? Throw a rock in her eye? Anytime I am passing a person I notify them with a fairly loud bell chime and I slow way down.

Me too. It is earbuds while looking down at a screen whilst meandering sideways on the path into oncoming flow. Zombies in public. Sometimes with a dog on a 12-foot leach. Some cyclist zombies have screens with earbuds as well.

As someone who owns a dog that zips back and forth quickly across the path on (yes) a fairly long leash, it is the cyclist’s responsibility to avoid the leash and the dog. I often rein in my dog when I see someone coming, but if someone approaches from behind, they better damn well be careful. When I’m the one on a bike and I’m passing a dog owner, I get as far away from the dog as possible and watch out for long leashes. If I’m approaching I slow down and try to ring the bell or do an “on your left” long in advance of the pass.

And, not to preach, but it is always the cyclist’s responsibility to operate carefully around pedestrians.

I just watched the CBS news from last night and they had a segment on Ebikes. It showed accidents mostly by kids and mostly with bikes that went really fast. My take away was yes the kids were riding too fast and yes the bikes in question had too high a top speed (my opinion is above 20MPH should always cut the motor). BUT, in both filmed accidents the cars in question pulled out in front of the moving bikes which, in my opinion made it the drivers fault.
I saw that segment too, and I pretty much agree with your take. A lot of those e-bike accidents seem to be a mix of riders going too fast and drivers not paying enough attention. In the clips they showed, it really did look like the cars pulled out without checking properly — classic case of not expecting a bike to be moving that quickly.

I do think e-bikes that go over 20 mph start to blur the line between bicycle and motor vehicle, so some kind of limit or better education for young riders would help. But yeah, in those accidents, it didn’t seem fair to pin all the blame on the kids when the drivers clearly didn’t yield.
