In the threads about where people are riding, etc, a lot of you have screenshots of routes, maps and elevation cardiograms ( for lack of a better term). Would you please talk about what app you use and why you like it and show us a screenshot example? Are the routes shown what you actually did (as in, your actual GPS tracked route), or is that the route mapped by the app and then you followed it? Thanks!

I use Ride With GPS, the app has a comprehensive library of rural and gravel rides. My comfort level for the summer months is 30 miles with 3,000 elevation gain. First you download the route then it gives turn by turn directions. After the ride you have your ride as a separate ride from the download. Here is an example; the downloaded ride was titled SWB Rural Valley Gravel and my bike I titled Yatesboro Loop.

If I had to use just one, I'd probably use ridewithgps. But since I don't have to use just one, I use a weird combination of Google Maps, Garmin Connect, and ridewithgps.

Garmin Connect has the best displays for the routes you actually ride, if you have a Garmin device.

ridewithgps is great for route planning and does the best (or really least sucky) turn-by-turn navigation. ridewithgps also has a lot of cool features that I haven't fully explored (even though I've been using it for three years) and the people running it seem to be real cyclists.

Google Maps is great for high-level planning, and their route finding algorithm can often find you very cool routes that you wouldn't otherwise find. Their turn-by-turn navigation will kill your battery and you can't really pre-plan a route and have Google Maps follow it.

Here are some samples of actual rides from Garmin Connect:

Oh, and here is the one of the above routes from ridewithgps:

I add the black circle to fuzz the location of my house. If someone wished to hunt me down and kill me they would have the choice of several homes to choose from :).
ridewithgps has a feature to do the fuzzing itself but I don't completely trust it.
