Vee Tire Speedster 27.5 X 2.8?

Has anyone tried this tire for road riding? My understanding is the tire is susceptible to punctures and the rubber surrounding the bead is thin. Seen some reviews with no issues. Minimal rolling resistance for road and not good on gravel. Considering this tire for road use but need to make a wider carbon fiber fender set if I do so. Lot of work making or altering a fender to see if the tires have better rolling resistance the Super Moto X.

Currently using Tannus armour with Moto X but have not had luck getting slime into the 2.1 presta tubes after removing the valve. The stuff i have is probablly past the shelf life date and too thick. If I ever give the Vee Speedseter tire a spin I'd defintley want to add slime in the tube. Not 100% sure about the rubber on the bead. Will be a really bad moment if the tire bead fails while riding..

Faster tires tend to sacrifice a bit of puncture protection for sure. I've never had issues with a bead failure though.

As for your Slime issue - yes, it's generally too thick for presta valves in my experience, but tubeless sealant works pretty well.

I was wondering if sealant might work. I'll give it a try. If I ever install a Vee Speedster tire I will opt for flat and pinch proof.
Veloplugs for the rim spoke holes, Tannus armour inside the tire and sealant in the tube. I have no ambition to flat out in the evening during mosquito season.
 
Sounds like a plan. I'd ask around about Tannus on R&Ms tho, we installed a few sets for a customer who ended up pulling them because he noticed they created enough rolling resistance to negatively effect his range - which might defeat the point of getting these lighter weight tires for you.

No worries! Said customer felt like the inserts caused their bike to roll slower, requiring a little more effort to get them up to speed and they observed that they were getting fewer miles out of a full charge than they had before installing the inserts.

Granted, one customer isn't a great sample size, but it might be worth asking around to see what others' experiences have been.
 
I have run the Speedster in 26x2.8 on MTX39's (32mm inside width IIRC) and they are great.

The tread by its nature picks up and throws sand and grit back at the rider. You'll see I have a body fender on the down tube of the bike and this is a big help. They roll smooth and fast. Inside I have a 26x4.0 oversized tube and FlatOut tire sealant. They do not self-steer. Tire pressure is near the max but its still really low thanks to the near-fatness of the casing. I have had this bike carrying in excess of 400 lbs so bigger tires with near max air pressure, on wider rims, has a practical application.

I formerly used Continental Contact Plus City tires in 2.15 on this bike and they were flatproof... but the ride was basically like round rocks.

I do not know if the Tannus inserts are increasing my ride avg or having a negative effect. I do wonder about it. I installed them inside the Super Moto X as some of the stop lights on my routes have broken glass on the asphalt including a lot of metal debris on the road shoulders. My ride avg for a 40 mi route with the Moto X increased to 1.2 mph compared to the avg's with Rock Razors. This is road riding, not trails, gravel or dirt. Smoother tred on the Super Moto X. I have no sophisticated way of testing with or without Tannus for rolling resistance. For all I know 'the RR could be better without Tannus but there is glass and metal to deal with.

Very cool bike! Are those Jones handlebars?
 
I've had 26x3.5 on my bike for three years. Zero flats but I don't ride off road much.
 
@Alanzo Yes those are Jones bars. I was hit by a car a few years ago and injured my wrists as part of the result. I can't ride straight bars anymore cuz of the pressure on the wrists. The Jones bars are on most of my bikes as a result. This pic's angle shows the bars and a good angle on the Vee 2.8 tires and their profile on the rims. they are right in the sweetspot of that rim width according to the DT Swiss chart.

Is this a bike you built? Very unique rack system!
I sent a photo of the Delite stem to Eric at Jones and he suggested a shorter stem if I switch to their handlebar. What is your stem length? The grip angle on your Jones bars makes a bit more sense to me for a natural grip.

I'd luv to try the Speedster tires but I may have to mill a fender shape with MDF that I can vacuum bag carbon fiber on to make a wide fender similar to the current setup.Takes time to do stuff like that. The clearance of the chain stay bridge on my Delite will be too limited for a fender with a 2.8 rear tire. The fender has to have a cutout for the chain stays or be made as 2 parts.

I had to heat bend the edge of the rear fender when I had a Schwalbe G-One on the rear rim. I do not know if R&M made the chaim stay bridge wider on the current models.
