The Fazua motor is great!

Hi all,

I read quite a few posts here while doing research for an ebike, there's not a ton of feedback on the Fazua motor and there's a lot of negativity around it for being underpowered and having a small battery so I thought I'd share my experience.

In short, the Fazua motor far exceeded my expectations. There is plenty of power and the range is good.

I'll start by saying this is purely for commuting and running errands, not trying to keep up on a club spin or climb 15% hills.

I rented an Orbea Gain last year to test on my 35km commute and aside from struggling up a very short 10% climb in a park I found it fine, I got to work fairly fresh but didn't save any time over my normal bike.

I'm 110kg. I have a 2017 Canyon Endurace CF with Zonda wheels and have basic fitness. I normally cycle 20-30km once or twice a week. I work 4 on/4 off shifts, 12 hour days so my time on the bike is limited.

I recently bought a Canyon Endurace ON. I was extremely nervous about how capable the system would be given the price. Range is quoted at 90-100km in low power. I didn't know if I'd be able to get to work on full power or if I needed to charge it every day or if it would even get someone my weight up a hill at higher speeds.

After a few test rides I went on a 43km spin to meet a friend for coffee. This brought me through the city with lots of stopping and up some small inclines through suburbs. It was also significantly warmer than usual, an hour cycling and I was barely sweating. In full 250w mode and noticeable headwinds on the way in, I got back with 50% battery.

When I cycled to work for the first week, I used about 40% battery for a 35km day. This meant I got two days from a charge and even someone as heavy as me could get 80-100km at full power. It's worth noting that I cycle at a decent pace, I don't give it my all but I also can't just take it easy and cruise along.

250w on the Fazua ramps up quickly without much effort required from the rider and is what I use most but it's very controlled. If you're barely pedaling, cycling through city traffic for example it won't shoot off. Power is very smooth to come on and off as needed.

Any reviews I've seen of the bike barely did anything more than list the specs and the few videos are from cyclists in very good shape. No longer am I sweating profusely at work or need to bring extra food to have energy after a 12 hour day. On my 21km commute in there's several long gentle inclines where I struggle to do 20kph on my carbon bike, the Fazua cruises along.

The eBikemotion in the Orbea couldn't do 25kph up 2-4% inclines at my weight, dropping to 20-22kph whereas the Fazua is almost always at 25kph. I didn't save any time off my commute with the eBikemotion, I save about 5 minutes in with the Fazua. Overall the system is very good. It's not just for people over 60!

Nice write up. How heavy is the bike/motor/battery combination?

They say the bike is around 15kg, the Fazua system is 4.6kg. With the battery and motor removed the gearbox stays in the bottom bracket which is 1.3kg.

I'm happy with the mid drive motor, being able to remove the battery is a big plus for charging. Having to bring the bike inside the office or leave the bike at a plug in the house would be a pain. The ability to upgrade wheels is another plus. Just need to keep an eye on drivetrain wear and tear.

Thanks DaveK92. I had posted a paper comparison among the lighter road oriented e-motors in another forum, looking for the kind of feedback you so generously provided. Your experience seems to confirm my general expectations. If interested, the comparison is post #30 here:

I have the same experience with the same bike, Canyon Endurance ON 7. I am also above 100kg and the battery is 20% down after cycling to work and home which is 25km both ways. In other words 100km is realistically possible. The motor is very quiet and kicks in seamlessly.

The only disadvantage: Removing and reinserting the battery pack is a massive pain. The first time it dropped, I have to fumble for 3-4min every time. The mount is not great.

Initial setup was also painful - I had to upgrade the bluetooth software through Fazua Ride - but Fazua support was quick to respond and the advice was on the spot.

But overall the capacity is good and the ride experience very pleasant. I can recommend this system.
