Supernova Lights - Positioning and On / Off options

Hey everyone, I wanted to circle back on Supernova lights, off switch.
1. The supernova m99 Pro lights work with the bafang ultra. The brake lights work well.
2. We can also wire the horn, and it sounds loud. It will be good to have if riding in traffic (though I still prefer the slightly gentle Spurcycle)

Light Placement

1. The Moloko loopbar interferes with light placement. We didn’t have this issue with Lezyne macro since you can mount them above the bars.
Please look at this image to tell you how supernova is mounted.

____We can solve this with Jones Riser OR the Handlebar mount (M99 CRC)

Apologies- I missed this placement issue earlier. So if you have ordered the UC pro with the Supernova m99Pro, there are 2 options
1. If you want the Moloko bar, we can use the handlebar mount. M99 CRC Mount. You can choose your positioning on the front part of the bar.
2. If you WANT a loop bar, and want the position to be on the stem I can swap out the Moloko with the Jones Loop bar with a riser at no cost.
3. If you don't care for the Loop bar,I can give you a nice One up Carbon bar.
>>>>>>>This swap is only available to people who have already placed the ordered the UC Pro with the supernova lights.<<<<<<

On Off Switch for the headlight

1. I installed the M99 Pro and I also confirmed with Supernova that the M99Pro will be always on. They adhere to EURO standards and a speed pedelec (45kmph) requires a DRL (daytime running lights). The toggle switch is for high beam / low beam.
2. I also looked at other powerful lights (over 1000 lumens) - Busch and Muller, Light and Motion, etc and all of them have DRL functionality with no explicit off switch.

Options
1. If you dont have an opinion about the on/off switch, you can keep the Supernova M99 Pro. I always ride with a DRL and I would recommend this.
2. If you NEED the on/ off switch, We can switch you to M99 Mini Pro. This is an excellent light as well with over 1100 lumens !

What action is needed right now ?
1. Please provide your feedback in comments and preferences
2. I will finalize and add these options to the build configurator in late July / August

Thanks.

@pushkar can the M99 Pro be installed on the forward bar instead of the rear? Wouldn’t this solve the blocking issue? If not, this is a tough decision for me. I want the M99 Pro (not mini) for sure and prefer the gentler sweep angle of the Moloko over the 45° of the Jones. Plus, I’ve already purchased the loop bag for the Moloko, if you recall our chat in PM.

As for the light, I too prefer the DRL functionality of the M99 Pro. I ride with lights on day or night. The hi-/lo-beam switch is just fine with me. So, as previously stated, the M99 Pro (not mini) for me.

Will you be ok with the handlebar mount ? See below (M99 CRC) ? That is absolutely an option if you want to mount it ON the front part of the handlebar. Let me know if that is an acceptable positioning.

I updated the post with the options. let me know if the handlebar mount is acceptable.

@pushkar, I also prefer the gentler sweep angle of the Moloko and the M99 Pro. Before I can make any decisions, I would like the following questions answered.
  1. What would be the issue with installing the light on the front bar of the loop?
  2. When you said Jones with riser at no cost, what riser were you referring to? I thought the bike came with the Octagon Cycles adjustable stem for the Founders. Are you referring to that or something else?
    • I just realized what you meant was the Jone Loop Bar with the riser design, not a separate riser.
  3. What are the disadvantages of having a multi-level loop bar? When I compare the price between the standard Jones loop bar and the multi-level loop bar, the standard is about 30% higher which leads me to believe there are inherent advantage to the single level loop bar design.

That looks like it would work just fine, if we can keep the wiring clean. I’m glad for this solution.

I just added the handlebar option for mounting. Missed that in the original post. Sorry about that.

The issue is more cosmetic than what I am making it out to be. A lot of bikes with Supernova have the light put in dead center and gives it the classic look. The initial renders showed it on the stem.. and I discovered that it may not be possible to do that with Moloko.

1. There isnt an issue other than aesthetics. The light will just stick out a little more.. Its a BIG light!
2. The Jones bar is this one - https://www.jonesbikes.com/jones-h-bar-loop-sg-2-5-aluminum-loop/ The stem will still work but may not be needed.
3. Multi level reduces the need to have another stem riser addition. Fewer changes needed to get it up and running.

Do you think the wiring aesthetics will be an issue for mounting in the front bar of the Moloko?

It would be great if you can provide pictures of different mounting configurations on the prototype when it's ready, so that we can all make an informed decision.

Would really like to see how that looks on a superbike prototype before committing to this option.

Yup. Will definitely do that. I wanted to get this out of the way so we know there are some workarounds and options.

How about the light on/ off switch ?

For the SuperNova M99 Pro, if you can get the on/off switch figured out, it would be great, but I don't think it's a blocker. Based on what I read of Supernova M99 Pro, there seems to be 3 modes. The DTL will stay at the 4.5W state and automatically adjust to the 15W low beam based on the ambient light (i.e. entering a tunnel or in the evening). To switch between low and high beams, you need to use the included switch. So, I'm assuming that there will be 2 switches for SuperNova - High/Low Beam Switch and a M99 Horn Switch.

Low beam1100 lm, 310 lx
Wattage low beam16 W
High beam1600 lm, 380 lx
Wattage high beam/td>27 W
Daytime running light32 Power LEDs
Wattage4.5 W

Yes there will be 2 switches. One for the light and one for the horn.

I don't think I have an opinion about this until I see a rendering or prototype.

I am curious about the Jones bar versus Moloko. I'm not a fan of the look of the Moloko's horns, but understand the purpose. Similarly, I like the aesthetics of the Jones, but don't yet get what the 45º sweep would do for the riding position. I'm riding a beach cruiser right now, and really like the upright sit and feel of it.

Willing to hear other's thoughts.

Personally I think the 45° sweep of the Jones is too much. It's too relaxed for my commuting purposes. I also think you lose a bit of steering control with that much sweep.

You some lose control and power to the pedals. But I don't think there will be a material difference between the Moloko and Jones in these regards.

Jones will probably work well for you if you like the cruiser position.

Have you considered using a Thorn Accessory Bar?

I'm probably going to want one to mount my handlebar bag anyway, so I assume that I could put the light either on the accessory bar or forward on the handlebar itself (basically your option #1).

The M99 Mini is perfectly fine for my purposes.

Re-read the post on handlebars in the private forum. I forgot that you can't use the Ergon grips with the Jones bar, so I think that makes Moloko the right option for me. Thanks all.

So confused :)...I have the super nova on the Stromer , I like it a lot Hope I get that on my bikes. I would like to be able to defeat the DRL if I could but not enough to change my light choice. I am used to straight bars for riding, no Jones for me. I am thinking the slightest bend would be ok. I like Ergon grips also. The light is on the middle of the handlebar on the Stromer, this works for me and nothing should interfere with the light pattern wither wires, cables or bar IMHO.

Well @pushkar did offer the straight carbon bar option so, you should be set.

@Pushar, Ravi is saying that the M99 Pro will always stay on unless you remove the battery. Is this true? I assumed that when the bike stops moving the light completely turns off after few minutes. I can't imagine the light being on constantly draining the battery even when it's parked.
