Stromer Elite Maintenance - Help!

Since I was rained out today decided to do a overall tuneup... Tightened every bolt, tightened spokes, sanded discs, cleaned chain, wash wax etc.

What I cannot sort is my #$^ Shimano SLX rear derailleur... Ever since it was new, it doesn't respond to the first downshift, then it jumps down two gears on the next click.. So I have been downclicking twice then upshifting once... stupid. Tried adjusting the H and L set screws, tightened the chain tension... Have around 2000 miles but it's been this way since new, so don't think it's chain wear.

Any suggestions will be appreciated!

2ooo is chain wear checking time...my shifters on both bikes have never been 100% , even new I think. I have had the chain and the rear gear assembly thingy replace , better but still not perfect somewhere in the shifting I am doing something similar. My bike has fallen too many times to blame the bike completely or even mostly. At best the mechanic may have not seen the all the damage done and is working around the problem??? I am now at about 6k miles, hers about 1500 and hasn't fallen, maybe once or twice in the stands not like mine ;)

All that said above just before I hit post I will say that part of my Platinums have just not been impressive, gut reaction

lol.. Yeah banging an EBike around has its own share of problems.. Althoguht I was hit by an SUV on my A2B Metro and only the spokes and front fender were wasted... and maybe a cracked throttle..

Guess I'll just live with the shifting problem or buy an upgraded SLX Shadow.

If you haven't dropped yours and your mechanic says he can do better give him a shot and let him do magic...the cassette and chain will at least need to be checked. I am not sure if we have the same cassette if you have an Elite (can't rememebr) but mine is known as avg at best and no high quality units are made for my bike . On the Swiss/German board I read of many replacemeets and the chains are made for regular bikes so they wear quickly. Both bikes have had the cassette replaced

Maybe.. Since this was a problem from day one don't think it's due to chain wear or cassette issue. May just drop $40 on a new snooty derailleur..lol

Please don't bash Stromer for an out of adjustment rear deraillier made by Shamino. Take your bike to a "regular" bike shop and tell them your rear cassette needs adjusting or better yet, "google" adjust front and rear Shamino deraillier, it's really quite simple. There are only three things you need to look at, high gear stop, low gear stop and

Opimax and JoePah- first let me thanks you guys for pointing me t0 the correct info on the front fork recall, mine was not in the recall.
Hey Guys, you're blaming Stromer for a simple maintenance issue. First, you should check your chain every 1000 miles, on this bike because of the stress of the motor's power, it won't go much further than that. You can buy a tool for $5.00 that will tell you when you need a new chain. If you replace your chain when needed, your rear cassette will last a long time, maybe 3000 miles. If you do this, you may never need a new front chainring. The rear derailleur on your bike is a Shamino, one the three best Companies for high end bike drivetrains. Your skipping in the rear cassette is a simple adjustment that you can do yourself. Google" Shamino rear derailleur adjust "and you will get several videos for step by step. No special tools required, scre driver and allen wrench. The drivetrains on these Stromer bikes are no different than many other non ebikes drivetrains. If you are uncomfortable doing it yourself, take it to a local bike shop (doesn't have to be a Stromer dearler) and for $20-$40 they will tune your drivetrain for you. Chainrings, chains, cassettes, shifter cables are all things that wear out and the better they are maintained and adjusted, the fewer replacement you will have.

Well the company name is Shimano. (not Shamino)

And nobody is blaming Stromer for anything.. Just asking for help with a maintenance issue (read the title).

As I've said previously, tried adjusting the rear derailleur from day 1 when there was zero chain wear and it would not stop skipping gears. We all know YouTube.

Then I took it back to the dealer who adjusted it.. This was a BMC dealer; BMC owns Stromer. They could not fix it either.

Reach the conclusion that this is just an inferior component or a poor fit for this bike.

Well, pardon me for trying to offer help. From now on, I'll just keep my mouth shut when I see your posts

My Stromer rear derailleur has always been spot on but the problem you are describing I had on my LHT. It was sloppy on some shifts, skip shifts, and on some gears I would have to shift twice. That was found to be a problem with the cable indexing, which is related directly to rear derailleur cable tension. There is an adjusting barrel on the derailleur that you can rotate to adjust cable tension. This is best done on a bike stand since you need to keep the pedals spinning and switching gears to see if you are on to something. It fixed the problem on my bike.

I am not bashing stromer for these problems specifically as much as I gave a shop x amount of dollars. They put me in a bike that exhibited these symptoms . I do not touch derailer or most anything still in warrentee. I take it back and they remedy . It doesn't work, do I say I am happy ? Do I think I bought a stromer frame and specifically a brand name shifter? I have 2 bikes that exhibit the same behavior, what would I logically think?

This is the friendliest board I have ever been on. I will never insult a member intentionally. I appreciate any help I receive here and try to help others. I will not support a brand blindly. I love riding my Stromer, I don't love my stromer I like it but have been let down too much. I have also have dropped it too much to blame it for all the problems, see some of my other threads.

What I would ask is to not start w/ the personal insults or taking somebody's post as you were directly talking to them and misunderstanding their tone of voice or assuming the worst when they have good track record. This is a friendly place, damn it!

Thanks Gus. Will give that a try. And it makes sense. Was thinking the return spring was weak. N

Stromer was founded at Thömus Veloshop, a small, but excellent bike manufacturer. They build bikes like this one:

The components are industrial mass ware. The only weak point is the cassette. That's why they changed it at the ST2. Therefore, my conclusion is: All (drivetrain stuff) depends on the skills of your bike mechanic.

Bluecat, tell us about the model that went to 55KPH please :) never had that option here in the States. was it as unreliable as the original Sport i had w/multiple motor replacement and issues?

Thx

With pleasure.

My 55 km/h runs very good - but every (!!!) tiny "electric"-part was replaced during the years (except the motor and the RECUP-magnet switch). Even with 52-11 combination, above 50km/h you have to pedal approx. 100rpm or more. Further disadvantage is the low torque of 25NM. Swiss law later reduced the Vmax to 45 km/h - but only valid for new bikes. As these bikes must have a midsize yellow licence plate, it's a pleasure for me giving all my strength (and battery power) to catch them, if I see one far in front of me.:))

Main headlight is switched off!

Nice looking bike there! I thought the Elite and St1 had freewheels... Do you know otherwise.

Thanks for the suggestion... I can look into a higher quality freewheel (or cassette if that's what it is), with possible fewer cogs.

Joe, as far as I know there is nothing built of higher quality, or ez upgrade or or anything! A fairly unique size.

Bluecat, you are also a young fit rider :) I don't know if i could catch anybody w/o the torque and my slow cadence I have. It sounds as unreliable as my original Sport. At least initially until you fixed it. What about electronic spare parts are they available? Is it the same motor and manufacturer? Is it a silver case?

Your bike looks very nice , a great picture of it

The freewheel is integrated in the cassette. This type of construction is outdated. The Sunrace 9 speed 11-32 freewheel cassette seems to be the only one that fits. A broken freewheel is a typical issue. than, you're lucky having BOOST-mode...

@opimax

The very first Stromer had a unprotected aluminium motor cover. After the first winter, they look horrible. Especially the 55 is a collector's vehicle; the fun it makes is making all issues forgettable. Spare parts are no longer available, but at the time, a guy sells his 55 motor.

On the pictures linked to the auction, you can see the "Kurzschluss-Stecker" on the left, the jack for display and torque sensor in the middle and to the rigth the power jack.
