Well, it looks like we are becoming a bit more mainstream these days, when you have a MAJOR insurer talking about ebikes. (obviously they must be getting tons of requests these days for people wanting to get them insured).

Nice 'awareness booster' for us all. Adds a certain legitimacy to the business, now doesn't it ? ;)

Thank you STATE FARM !

(PS. People ask me about insurance ALL the time, when purchasing. Of course spending on an ebike is not an insignificant amount of money, and with super high bike and ebike demand, thefts have increase materially, as there are big time shortages of new, and used bikes and ebikes. Even some bike shops have been buying USED whereever they can find them, because they ran out of and could not source new bikes fairly early in this season. and they know they can't 'live' on service alone. So nice timing and opportunistic message by a MAJOR insurer. Fascinating. )

I expect they are hoping to be able to sell insurance for E Bikes in the future which is a little sad. One of the reasons I got rid of my motorcycle in favor of an E bike is that they don't need to be registered or insured and you don't need a license to ride one. Hoping that doesn't change.

There's nothing about ebikes that will keep you from being sued if you run over someone. Not sure not being required to buy insurance is that great a deal.

TT

I’m sure they are trying to attract more business to follow the ebike trend. I hardly think it somehow legitimizes ebikes though.

Is that ebike insurance only available in california?

I took out a velosurance policy but am regretting it...after reading the fine print I am skeptical they would pay out in a loss or theft...lot of little technicalities in the policy.

I don't take insurance companies getting involved in anything as a positive.
They take a necessary evil and manipulate it to the point of making billions while screwing as many as possible in the process
An industry of leaches

Uh ... maybe states will notice people are dropping a few thou to quite a few thou on a bike and realize that requiring registration and insurance just might create a new revenue stream for govt. coffers? Ya think? Maybe?

DIdń´t hear mention that riding in traffic is like a fawn being pursued by a pack of wolves. Gotta have eyes in the back of your head.
More bike lanes & bike paths now!!!
Bike lanes in Toronto are murderous because cars are parked between the traffic lanes and the bike lane. Drivers turning right can't even see if bikes are beside them or not when they turn right.
Also passengers get out of the cars when they park, opening doors and stepping out without a thought.
Restaurant patio umbrellas are everywhere, with the points sticking out into the bike lane.
On and on, bike lanes here are more dangerous to ride than riding in the traffic.
I can say that I notice they are still trying to work out how to implement the bike lanes not in such a crazy way.

Insurance companies will be happy to lead the parade to necessary insurance but no insurance without certification and licence.

Wish that graphic had made clear that Class 2 is throttle AND pedal assist - it makes it appear that a class 2 bike is operated solely via the throttle.

That's because that is how the class law chart describes it also. I have no problem being a 2nd class eBiker however that sees the value of having a throttle on board for the times it can be useful.

Just got off the phone with my State Farm agent about getting a personal articles policy for mine. She didn't know what an ebike was. Supposed to get back with me. It's covered on my homeowner's policy somewhat but subject to the $1000.00 deductible.

Will an ebike still classifies as an ebike if you just remove the battery and go for a ride ?? What if you remove both the motor and the battery ?

The insurance company is going to ask for the model/number, what class it is, serial number, etc. before they will insure an ebike. Doubt they’d care if you removed the battery or the motor.
