ST1X

Hello,

I've been a forum member for a couple of years and really wanted to thank the community for all of their input and knowledge regarding ebikes and specifically Stromer! Also thanks to Court, his reviews and videos are the best on the web!

Having owned a Stromer ST1 sport for a few years, I really appreciate the design and engineering that went in the bike. I can't tell you how many family members and friends that are amazed when they take their first ride, and are shocked at how much fun biking can be. I commute to my office on a regular basis (14 miles each way), and tackle several steep hills. However, there are a few draw-backs. Need for speed, the sport has the elite motor and limited to 20 mph. Also, my wife and I would like to ride together.

Fortunately I resolved the draw-backs. I ordered a Stromer ST1x and couldn't be more excited! It won't arrive for another month or more, and I promise to give it a full review and report back to the forum.

Go Stromer!

Congrats on the new bike. I've experienced a similar phenomena with my Riese and Muller. I was never stopped by strangers regarding my regular bikes. But I constantly get stopped when I have the ebike. At the grocery store, on the sidewalk at at the coffee shop. Last Saturday, I let a stranger at the coffee shop take a test ride (bike has a GPS tracker) after I spent a good deal of time answering his questions. My neighbor and a couple of other friends have tried the bike. Each time they return with the biggest smiles. Its fun to see their reactions which so far have been overwhelmingly positive.

Best of luck with your new purchase; the ST1x seems like a decent compromise between the St1 Sport and the ST-2. Interestingly, the sT1x apparently does not have the carbon fork? But I am guessing that the ST1 Sport may not have had a carbon fork either...I originally had the St - Limited, but upgraded to the ST-2 and am very happy that I did. You will love the difference in speed...enjoy!

Thanks, appreciate your thoughts! The ST2 was not in my price range, however I'm looking forward to longer rides and upgraded the battery to the 814wh.

I've ridden the ST1 Platinum, but not the ST2. What's your opinion riding hills. Big difference, or very similar?

I'm thinking, very similar. The motor in the ST-2 seemed a little smoother to me and I am thinking that the new motor on the ST1x will be quite a bit like the one in the ST-2. I'm betting that Stromer has hit a home run with the ST1X in getting a model into a price range that will work for more folks. One word of caution if you are not familiar with the OMNI set up: if you put the bike in "lock" mode and then try to ride off without taking it out of lock mode, the bike will literally freeze-up after about 60 feet or so. The only way you can then unlock the bike is through the Stromer portal. Depending upon you cell connection, that can be a bit iffy. Patience will become a virtue here. I have done this there or four times and once had to wait about 10 - 15 minutes before I washable to communicate with the portal and unlock the bike. I nearly always lock my bike with a bike lock, but also put the OMNI in lock mode. From days gone by, when i removed the bike lock, I simply hopped on the bike and pedaled away forgetting that I had also used the Omni...hopefully, I have taken the "cure" as it were.

I'm also a bit curious about the back wheel removal on the ST1x...hopefully it will be similar to theST-2 (a pull out plug) as opposed to the ST-1, where one had to cut the ties holding the power cord to the back wheel before you could disconnect the power?

Thanks for the tip on the Omni lock mode!

A couple of reasons that why I went with the ST1x. Originally I was set on purchasing the ST1 Platinum, and was quoted at a very favorable price, which was hard to turn down. Unfortunately, I have not ridden the ST1x but ordered it anyway based on a few design improvements over the ST1 Platinum:
  • Better overall frame, and integrated wiring
  • Better display and controls
  • Better motor (48v vs 36v), and better performance (a little more torque)
  • Single ring at the crank similar to the ST2S (simplifies the design, cleaner, and multiple rings are unnecessary)
  • Larger battery capacity
  • The charcoal gray color and graphics
  • Rear wheel removal! I've had to fix a few flat tires, and if there is one major design challenge on the ST1 series is the complexity of the rear hub assembly. Unless I'm mistaken, the ST1x is the same as the ST2

Makes sense, for sure ,and I'm hoping that the rear wheel design is similar to that on the ST-2...should be a real fun ride for you!

I test rode the St1x at an ebike expo. It thought that it felt pretty much identical to the ST2. I would spend the extra $500 to get the 814wH battery but other than that it feels like a budget ST2.
