Signs of Spring

It is 85 up in the North Bay. I already have a tan but am going to take a cool drink with my shirt and shoes off, with a big hat, a lawn chair, and a new book.
This morning W. PA and E. Ohio had a huge sonic boom that rattled windows. It was a meteor hitting the atmosphere. People freaked.

Today's predicted high at the coast is 79°F. And they're predicting 80 and 81 for the next 2 days, at the peak of our local heat wave.

Honestly, doubt we'll get past 75 near the water. Of course, the mountains and deserts to the east will be a very different story.

Last night, however, the local weatherman urged everyone on the coast to stay indoors and well-hydrated. Say what you want about their track record on the weather, but you can't argue with their fear mongering skills.

Headed out to join the Wednesday morning road ride — half coast, half inland hills. Fingers crossed I make it back alive.

Well, made it back from the group ride alive. Average age was probably pushing 70. No one had a heat stroke.

The ride was officially 24 mi with 52 ft/mi of climbing. Getting to the ride and back home brought it to 37 mi. Proud that I kept up in OFF most of the time but had to resort to ECO and rarely SPORT on the bigger hills. Humbling when you consider that I had the only ebike.

@mschwett , one guy showed up on a gorgeous Specialized Aethos. I could easily pick it up and hold it off the ground with one pinkie. That was with 2 full water bottles onboard. Mind-boggling.

Hi Honey.
I am going out for a gallon of milk and the dozen eggs we need. See you in 20 minutes. But I don't have any pedals or a rack with panniers. I will swing the plastic bags off the handlebars. And pretend that I have pedals, by kicking the crank arms. The price is right. That's the best part.

Specialized S-Works Aethos 2 is the lightest production road frame in the world ... Frame Weight: 595g/1.3lb (56cm), Bike weight is 13lb 3oz., so add pedals and water bottles. So I can see how it can be lifted with one finger.

I would love to ride one! But, for fun, I just lifted my Ibis Hakka gravel bike (1000g carbon frame) with two fingers- fitted with carbon wheels and road tires. Its 18lbs (ready to roll) is very light to me and my 215lbs 😂. The Creo is much more planted bombing down road descents at 33lbs.

The Big Savage Tunnel on the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) trail opens on March 25th. Always a great sign of spring here in the east.

They close off the tunnel portals during the cold winter months to keep frost from damaging the tunnel liner.

We have a similar thing in New England, with roads like Vermont's App Gap (Route 17) opening up in early April, and the Mt. Washington Auto Road opening up in May.
