The weather cooperated for yesterday's ride, but the rail-trail didn't. The multi-use trail sees heavy ATV traffic which creates a berm in the middle of the trail. I had to cross the berm to avoid some large rocks, and the front wheel hit soft gravel and turned sideways.

I didn't go over the handlebars, and managed to do a bit of a tuck-and-roll on my way down, but my left shoulder hit the ground pretty hard, and one end of the handlebars speared my chest on the left side, and the other end hit the inside of my right thigh. Road-rash on my left elbow and left knee completed the carnage.

I lay on the ground for a while to let the pain die down, and was able to get up with some assistance. My cycling companions had alcohol wipes, antiseptic ointment, and bandages, and after some doctoring we continued on our way.

The bruises are somewhat bothersome, but the road-rash on my elbow is painful to the touch, and when I flex my arm..

All things considered, things could have been much worse. In future I will pay a lot more attention to the trail conditions, and plan to add a med-kit to my rear bag.
Seems like you dodged a bullet with your shoulder. Heal up quick.

I never thought to check my helmet to see if it made contact when I fell. I just had a look, pretty decent scratch marks on the left side, just above my ear.

I never ride without my helmet, but an alarming number of riders do, the majority of them in their teens or younger

I took a hard spill a couple of years ago. My helmet was dented quite noticeably which necessitated replacement.

I often ride in foggy smoke with a fluoride I_V 🙃
Unfortunately for city riders, which will make up the majority here, there is no choice but to ride through a fog of exhaust emissions. When humans are faced with something they have no control over they typically minimize any risk and get on with their lives. Like people who live below dams. Nothing to worry about, dams rarely burst.

No one has brought up wind yet? I haven't been able to ride for over a week due some crazy south westerlies off a big low out in the pacific. It's calmer this morning, gusts to 14 km/h but the last few days it's been gusts up to 40! That's like double my cruising speed, I'd be going backwards for half the ride and passing cars coming back. If I didn't get blown off the road into the paddock. I remember a few years back going down this long straight road and feeling no wind on my face? I looked down and saw I was doing 35 km/h -no motor- Wow I thought, then I realized I'd be turning around at the end and coming back into it. Some of the worst cycling ever that was, having to crawl along basically in the second lowest gear with my head down.

I'm sitting around 1100 miles myself. I typically ride around 3100 annually, so I am behind in my ebiking. I didn't ride most of June, being out of town. This July has been really hot. Yesterday was my first 20+ miler since late May,

We had AQI readings above 500 last week, very high, equivalent to 8 cigarettes, according ti the news. I did go riding though in the evening when it dropped to 200,
