Rear Derailleur Downgrade?

The rear derailleur on my new ST is different than that pictured on the Lectric website. It's simply labeled "Shimano" and appears identical to the ones found on the bargain basement Wal Mart bikes. What's up with that?

Congrats on your new bike. When did you order and when did it arrive? THanks

Lectric responded to my inquiry - "The other model was out of stock and we would've had to wait 3 more months to send bikes out if we wanted to use the exact same model." Not really happy with the bait and switch.

I ordered the bike on 12/12 and it was delivered on 12/19. I guess they can ship fast if they substitute lower quality parts for out of stock items.

Even the ones without the name Tourney printed on them are considered part of the Tourney line, by Shimano and their sellers. I think the only downside is some of the models that aren't labeled Tourney don't have a B-screw for adjustment. That won't really be an issue as long as you keep the same gear set on the back. If you went with larger diameter cogs (more teeth on freewheel or cassette) then you'd need a B-screw. The quality is about the same on all Tourney.

Agree. I see them as part of the Tourney line on the Shimano website, just the bottom end of the line. Take a look at the $98 Wal-Mart bikes with "Shimano shifters" and you'll see this bargain basement derailleur. And with all the recommendations to switch over to an 11-34 freewheel on the XP, that was going to be part of my upgrades. That may now be an issue.

I ordered ours the day after, 12/13 and haven't heard a word. Maybe they're waiting on the right derailers, lol

Hmmm that little red gear/sprocket is what Lectric included? Interesting.
I've seen the bottom red sprocket for years now... Not sure if it's a OEM thing.
I wouldn't worry too much about which derailleur you received as long as it shifts correctly. The cost and quality level between the Tourney and Altus are negligible.

I would highly recommend splurging for at least Alivio or Deore level if you can. In my experience, the higher quality derailleurs are easier to adjust and require less adjustments over time.YMMV

The Tourney is now back in stock for $8.79 and I would avoid it and along with the entry-level derailleurs circled in red... Alivio, Acera, and Altus.
I would recommend starting at the Deore/Claris level and better including LX, SLX, XT, and XTR... you will be much happier in the long run. ;)

You may disagree, but my experience with Acera and Alivio are not bad at all and really aren’t “entry level” imho. For sure notably better than Tourney. They wouldn’t be a bad option if $$$ is a big issue.
