RadRover6 '22 Shifter Change

My wife and I just bought new RR6, when I am going up a steep hill and am shifting down, when I reach my thumb up to the shifter to shift, often the throttle slips in my palm and I suddenly lose my speed and momentum. By the time I shift down and turn the throttle back on my speed is so slow I have to shift down into "2 & 1", and I waste battery getting my speed back up. Also, it's even more hazardous for my wife trying to shift down moving her thumb up to shift, loosening her grip on the handle bars, it's almost impossible for her to shift down. I think that I want to install a Shimano 7 spd Quick Shift under bar mount so I can easily use my thumb, will any Shimano 7 spd Quick Shift work with the existing Shimano Altus 7 spd derailer?

To answer your question, my guess would be yes. Pretty sure they will work together.

But taking a step back trying to follow what you have going on, are you saying you are using the throttle while pedaling? I THINK that might be an unusual scenario. If you have chosen the proper PAS (assistance) level, and that's in use while pedaling, there should be no need for additional power via the throttle. Or have I totally misunderstood what you are saying?

I can see wanting to use the throttle while pedaling when you're caught off guard by a sudden hill. That's right when you want to shift gears of course. The trick is to not get caught off guard and anticipate the need to change gears and do it a little sooner.

I've ridden bikes all my life but learning how to take full advantage of PAS, gears, and throttle with my Rad Rover took a little while. I hardly ever use my throttle. As AHicks said, setting the PAS level, and doing that a little in advance too, is a better way to deal with most hills.

In the meantime until I find a shifter that will work, I rotated my shifter back so I have easier access with my thumb and that really helped.
I'm 74 and 30 yrs ago I used to ride everyday for years but gradually rode less and less and stopped about 15 yrs ago, but with the e-bikes now I decided to get one and am riding everyday and am really enjoying it. We are going to do a week bike pack trip in the San Juan Is in Sep, which we used to do every year. Anyway I'm learning how to best use the PAS; I want to get exercise and build my legs back up and right now I just keep it in "1" and use the shifter, and throttle when I need the boost it's faster than reaching my hand to push the buttons to change PAS level; everywhere we ride there are lots of hills and I'm constantly shifting up and down, do you have any better suggestions? I still ride dirt bike and am used to the right hand turn throttle. I've tried the PAS on 3 etc. but have noticed when I slow down to make a U-turn or sharp turn on a trail and I start to pedal and the motor takes off faster before I'm really ready to accelerate, is this normal, it seems like a safety issue?
 
The biggest tip I can share is when you come up on a situation where you're in the wrong darn gear to start a climb (again, hey it happens to all of us, especially early on), the easiest way to prevent a stall without crashing your gears is to hit the "up" PAS button. It's new, so it's a little counter intuitive at first, but I find myself using it quite a bit in the hills, using 1,2, and 3 frequently, with occasional use of 4 on the really big ones....

Loooong history of street and dirt bikes, ATV's, snowmobiles, etc. here too. These e-bikes are much tougher to use efficiently than they first appear. REALLY different! Give yourself a few hundred miles to get comfortable. Won't be long and you won't have to think about it nearly as much

That tight turn might be best negotiated with the throttle, without pedaling?

I'm 71. Many of us are older here! So glad to hear you've discovered e-bikes and you're out and about again. -Al

I have a RadCity 5 which came with the microshift ts71-7 shifter. It is a thumb tap shifter with the levers below the handlebar. I really like this shifter and on another non ebike I have I replaced the twist shifter with the ts71. attached is a link to the ts71 on the microshift site.
