Group ride planned for Central Pennsylvania and the Mid Atlantic.

All are welcome! From anywhere. We have about 10 or 12 in the area that expressed interest at the moment. Nothing to commit to, let me know if this interests you, if you can't come on the day no big deal.

Sunday August 16, 2020

Meet 9:30 am. Ride leaves at 10:00 am

Meet location:

Old Trolley Line Park Elizabethtown, PA 17022 https://maps.app.goo.gl/1m7F9buqZwjYoM786

Ride the Lebanon Valley Rail Trail

Lebanon Valley Rails to Trails

With a stop in Mt Gretna

Mt Gretna – Official Site of Mount Gretna, PA for community and visitors

And the "World Famous Jigger Shop"

https://www.jiggershop.com/

There are other options for food in Mt. Gretna. The Jigger Shop is an area favorite to put on more calories than you could ever burn on a bike ride ;)

We thought we would ride to the 15 mile marker in Lebanon and stop at Mt. Gretna on the return. There are some inclines on this trail. Beautiful area to ride. The ride can be lengthened or shortened depending on what everyone wants to do.

Check back here for updates.

Is there something you would like to do in town? We usually make a short detour for something to eat in town and get back to the trail. The Jigger Shop is open. The trail is both the ride and the destination:)

It is a pretty town, covid can't shut the pretty down;)

OK Mr JR, I'm in! I haven't been over there yet this year. Would love to meet up with some e-bikers for a change.
I had assumed you, our ride leader, were going to join us.

Just curious, what’s the total length of your ride? (I’m just getting started e biking so if it’s more than 15-20 miles total it would be beyond my current ability.)

Hi Brian. The plan is really flexible. Several of us are used to social group rides and there's always a mix of rider types. We'd love to have you. The above noted plan states we ride to the 15 mile marker and return with a break. That is about 35 miles. When Shoestring and I made the rough plan last weekend we talked about riding roughly 25 to 30 miles round trip. The best thing is there's a short cut to ride into Mt. Gretna, which is about 7 miles from the trailhead where we're leaving from. So part of the group might want to do a shorter ride, 15 miles or so. Everyone can enjoy a ride and lunch in Mt Gretna.

If some wanted to extend the ride even further, it's possible to ride about 44 or 45 miles if you add both the Conewego and the Lebanon trails plus the detour into Mt. Gretna.

I hope you can make it.

Thanks JR. I’m in Strasburg VA but visit family in Mechanicsburg PA quite often, so there’s a real chance I’ll join you for this in August. I should have a spare battery by then so I could probably do the entire ride. I don’t yet know how far this fat e bike will go on one battery so If I don’t receive the spare by then I’m going to have to limit my ride to less than 20 miles.

Count me in ! Mt. Gretna has been on my bucket list for a trail ride since the first time I visited there.
It's a really great trail in a historic location. I'm hoping for 85° and mostly sunny. Could be tough to get in August.

Barb and I won't be doing the whole 30 mile loop thing at once either, but we'll ride some on ebikes and some in the van between trailheads. Im looking forward to it.
I'm okay with whatever the majority wants to do. I'm interested in meeting more of you and having a nice ride. Hopefully this is just the first group ride. The EBR CPA Chapter;)

Let's see ... EBR's CPA chapter of SOBs International. That's more acronyms than most companies. And I have never met someone online first then in the real world. Hope for good weather.

I’ve got a nice 10 mile back country bike loop laid out now. I can ride the whole trip in the lowest PAS1 assist level now, including some fairly long hills, one of which is a 2 mile gravel road. But I’m only averaging 10-13mph.

After ten miles on PAS1 today, the 10.4ah battery is still showing 5/5 bars on the charge level.

I think if I can make this ten mile ride daily till mid August, I might be able to complete your 30 mile trip with one fully charged battery, so I plan on meeting you there!

I've met several members from EBR. When we were working on the local access issue some members came to help. @kathik drove a good distance from the next county, she even brought her eMTB when we set up a test rides for the Parks Department Board. Some great people here.

I frequently ride with other ebikers on rail trails and an average of 13 mph is very common. My bike shows average speed of trip and lifetime average speed. I am a true 'Easy Rider'. Every so often I do have a need for speed! That doesn't play out well with others on a rail trail. Speed kills range too. Our ride leader ran the Parks Department weekly social ride for 5 or so years. Those rides have all ages and abilities, from children to seniors well into their 70's.

Hi J.R.,
I’m in Harrisburg this weekend and I’m heading up to the Lebanon Valley Rail Trail tomorrow mid morning for a trial run. I’ll probably ride 15 miles.

Which trailhead parking area is closest to Harrisburg? The various websites list multiple parking areas and I’m not getting an actual street address I can put in my Waze app when I search some of them.

Hopefully you can access Google maps. I have these saved, but I don't have street addresses. By far the most convenient is:

Old Trolley Line Park Elizabethtown, PA 17022 https://maps.app.goo.gl/1m7F9buqZwjYoM786

A stones throw off I-283 from Harrisburg. The park and lot there just opened last year.

There is a trailhead southwest of there on the Conewago Rail trail which connects to the Lebanon RT.

40°09'51.2"N 76°38'27.8"W Lancaster Co Conewago Recreation Trail, Elizabethtown, PA 17022 https://goo.gl/maps/4nZF5NEheoxBunf39

Not the best lot, gravel and no bathroom or spot-a-pot. It's also not as convenient to Harrisburg.

Another option in the area is the Lancaster River Trail.

Beautiful views of the Susquehanna River. Mostly paved, all but a 4 mile northern extension.

Northern trailhead (new)

Southern trailhead.

Awesome, thanks J.R.!

I prefer the Waze app on my iPhone over Google Maps, so I searched Old Trolly Line Park in the app and it came right up.

I’ll definitely check out those other trails as I’ll be in town this weekend and next visiting family and have lots of spare time.

I plan to go back to Newville and ride more of the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail while I’m here too. When I first got the e bike I rode about 5 miles there and want to go back for a longer visit.

(I should probably have an EMT with a cardiac crash cart following me ... 🚴‍♂️)

Cumberland Valley, great summer trail! They put in the most amazing pre-fab aluminum bridge over the road there. Between that and the tunnel under the road, they spent a lot of money on that trail. More miles planned.

Have you ridden the section through Shippensburg University? Really pretty in summer when school is off.

Have a safe trip.

So far I just got on the trail at Newville and only rode about 2 miles south and a mile north from the parking area. I might make it to Shippensburg this weekend.
