NUTT hydraulic brake

Hmmm. Thanks for the links. I've never ridden a bike with hydraulic brakes, so this is pure question, not opinion. How much better are hydraulic brakes then mechanical disc brakes, really? I mean, I've have never had an issue with mechanical disc brakes stopping me when and where I wanted to stop, and I've never felt like, 'whew, my hands were about to give out, I just barely made it that time!' Even in the old days of rim brakes, stopping was never an issue I worried about at all.

I'm old enough that I (barely) remember mechanical brakes on cars and non-power steering. Power steering is definitely a plus, and hydraulic brakes make a whole lot of sense on 4000 pounds of steel going 60+ mph, of course.

If my bikes had hydraulic brakes I'd probably brag about them, but what's the real advantage?

They don’t require regular adjustment, the standard Tektros on the Rad only move one pad so wear is uneven and you may have to re-center the caliper.

cheap brakes are going to not feel or work as well as better brakes. there are large differences between brands and grades of brakes. like the feel of magura and the effort is more then my Shimano. cheap ones are going to feel crappy and to be that strong.

I have had both mechanical and hydraulic disc brakes. Hydraulic disc brakes are self adjusting and that makes all the difference. I had to fuss with the alignment of the mechanical disc brakes every time I took a wheel off the bike and even though I adjusted them frequently, they were noisy. The experience almost turned me off of disc brakes altogether, but fortunately I tried some good quality hydraulic brakes and it solved all those problems. Hydraulic aren't maintenance free though. You do have to bleed the brakes if they feel mushy.
